In some areas of the country, the first sighting of a Robin might herald the coming of Spring. For others, the blooming of Forsythias or Eastern Redbuds might let you know Spring is finally here. For me, it's the arrival of the first lowly Dandelion.
I found it today, in my perennial bed. It will be the first of thousands I will have in my yard.
You see I live on 5 acres of what once was a pasture. When we first saw the property, there were buffalo roaming about. Yes, you read that right! The owner had a small herd, I think for tax purposes. Pretty cool actually. Walking it that first day, deciding if this was the property for us, meant being very careful about where we stepped! The buffalo were also right there no fence or anything, making us quite nervous.
When we built our house we decided to landscape near to the house, but not really out very far into the yard (pasture). When all the weedy grasses come in, I mow it regularly and it looks pretty much like any other country yard in our area. BTW, I do weed the perennial garden!
This time of year the dandelions start sprouting and the Henbit, another invasive weed, start doing their thing. For awhile, our property will be awash in purple from the Henbit and yellow from the dandelions.
People who really enjoy a perfectly manicured yard, would be driven crazy by my property. I kind of like the fact that I don't put any herbicides down and just enjoy the way it looks from season to season. It works for us, and we love the view from our front porch.
