Remembering Tom and Lars at the Dog Park. What a humbling day that was

I sure miss my dog but it doesn't take much to get a grin on my face with some of the precarious things he and I would do. Recently I drove by a dogpark and it got me to thinking and I could not help but laugh and laugh about what a sap I could be at times. It must have been about 2007 in summer and it was hot. Lars and Tom Braatz  went to a dog park in Waukesha County and from watching movies and television shows I heard and seen so much about the comradely between men sitting on benches and woman coming up to them and striking up conversations. "Heck, I'm up for that" I said to myself. Wisconsin has numerous dog parks. When I lived in Ozaukee County there was a dog park called mutland meadows. I only went to that place once. Milwaukee County has some as well.

Dogs socializing; how fun could that be. Dog Park here we come. Entering the fence came Lars which was 130 pounds of big, friendly, majestic, and happy German Shepherd. The sniffing starts and he immediately has new girlfriends. As Lars walks and runs around I see little dogs jumping up and landing on their backs like some submissive game. They looked like bugs biting the dust. It was nice to see that most dogs can play together. Sure, there were a few that were bullies but that did not last long when they stood head to head; besides, Lars has a head on him that probably is twenty pounds, 6-7 inch long ears, smiling teeth that are 2-3 inches long, and he looks convincing. The truth is he is so desensitized; he was incapable of hurting anything. The one thing mandatory for a Search dog, and dogs that go through FEMA training is they were desensitized. They could sit by ambulances, large crowds, and they didn't move. They don't care about other animals around them. Lars was also a Delta dog for therapy going into hospitals, nursing homes, and we would go visit our friends at the VA centers; the dog was mellow.

Not like his owner which at that time was pretty electric. I am so glad I listened to my friend down south that told me to mellow out. She would be proud of me and that I listened to her and did. I thought to myself at the time 'Oh here come some ladies that want to chat, or sit down.' This stunning woman says  "Hello, your dog is beautiful, what's his name." the gal ask me. I reply "His name is Lars" "What are you ladies up today today?" "We are sisters and just taking our dog to get some exercise." "Sisters, wow, that's neat" I said. They replied "You know, you look a lot like our dad." Lars, Lars, come on buddy, time to leave, come on, lets go....  that was a truly humbling day.
