Holy Cats, You Scared the Cr@p Out Of My Client!

catcrossingWe were showing homes yesterday and it was getting later in the day. We had been out for a few hours and maybe this happened because my buyer was worn out. When we opened the door, a very unusual looking cat was sitting immediately to the right, just inside. My buyer glanced at it, thought it was a statue, and then screamed as it very slowly rotated its head!

I have to admit, I was freaked out, not so much by the cat, but by the reaction of my buyer. She obviously was not a "cat person"! I don't know different breeds of cats, but I have to admit, this cat was a little strange looking with a very large head and a very skinny body.

We continued to move through the house. So did the cat, who seemed to take extreme delight in very quietly finding a new position somewhere in front of my buyer, just out of sight. I heard another half scream as she came out of the kitchen and saw the cat on top of the armchair in the family room. She mumbled that she had forgotten about the cat! The cat had blended in with the piece of furniture until she moved her head to once again gaze at my buyer! Yikes. She definitely had her number!

By now we had moved into the Master, and you guessed it, my buyer this time was startled by a second cat (I'm sure they were twins) leisurely watching us from among the pillows on the bed.

Ok, we've all shown houses with cats, dogs and all sorts of pets in the house. We've seen the notes to the agent saying, "Do Not Let The Cat Outside"! But please, please, at least us know in advance that a cat or two are loose in the house!

So, have you had what I call "Close Encounters of the Unusual Kind" with furry friends while showing homes?

Tom - you are certainly a storyteller.  I was laughing while reading.  Yes, I was greeted when I opened the door at one home by a loose Bernese Mountain Dog who reared up and put his paws on my shoulders.  Luckily, I am a dog person and he was VERY friendly but it scared the bejeezus out of me and my buyers.

Would love to have seen a picture of the cat to know what the heck it is.  Yes warning us about pets is a good idea.

Some of the offices here have policies that they will not list a house unless the owners agree to remove all the pets for every showing. No negotiations on this one. I have mixed feelings on that one. Howver, that being said, you should ALWAYS note on the listing when pets are on the property. I have a listing in which there is a cat in the house. I've seen her once. She hides. However, many people are allergic to cats, so I made sure it's on the MLS sheet in a couple of places. Haven't had any problems yet, but you just never know....

Yep, those sneaky, pesky cats, LOL.  At least the listing sheet needs to say cats somewhere as some people are highly allergic.

I spent a few moments talking with a bird (No, I did not know it was a bird) then I rounded the corner of the room and there sat the BIRD.  OK, I felt a little stupid.

I have had animals hiding under the beds in homes while showing only to have them come out when I was locking up.

Tom,

I've had run ins with cats and dogs.  A funny showing happened when I went to show the "really big" closet in the bedroom, and as I reached for the door the tenant shouted "don't open the door, I'm naked!"

We have all had surprises, of course animal surprises are usually humorous.  My most embarrassing occurrence was at an investment property in a college town.  As required we gave the tenants a 24 hour showing notice.  I always, I entered this property and loudly announced my presence as a precaution. The surprise came when we entered a 2nd floor bedroom to discover 2 college coeds in the middle of the "deed". I quickly closed the door, but the young lady (in her birthday suit) came out to apologize about forgetting about the showing.  Interesting showing but no sale that day.

One time I was showing a home to a client and as soon as I opened the door a cat darted outside. We spent 20 minutes cathcing the cat and putting it back in the home. I later found out that it was a neighbor's cat and wasn't supposed to be in there in the first place.

Midnight above is too cute. Funny story, Tom. I always ask home buyers now before showing homes if they have pets. Usually that is when they will talk about if they have allergies if they don't own pets. One time during a home showing a home buyer began having difficulty breathing the minute we stepped in the door. She said, they must have cats. We left immediately. It would be nice if listing agents gave notice and further instruction if any. Most agents do, and now I ask home buyers just to be sure.

That was funny! I had a dog of ours that did that slow head turn thing at the same time a visitor to our house was turning her head. She jumped off the couch and screamed because it unnerved her. I watched the whole thing unfold in real time from across the room so I saw it from a different perspective. It was weird! It was like the dog was reading her mind and her his at the exact same time to turn toward each other. That was 30 years ago and I still laugh about it in my head! Danny Dog!

Pets in the home should definitely be on the listing. There are people that are afraid of different animals and some have allergies.

Hmmmm...now I could see screaming if the pet was an alligator or a snake or something of that sort, but screaming over a cat??? My goodness...the people we meet!

I had a buyer client that was TERRIFIED of cats! Seriously terrified. I had to lock a cat in the bathroom because she was very large and playing amongst our legs, freaking the buyer out and the only way she would look at the house was if I "got that thing out of here". I did and she bought the house. I had shown her several homes and had no idea she had issues with cats. Now I ask.

I'm laughing but I do take it serious since I've lost sales when clients have allergies. Had to pay a lot of money to get the cat dander removed. Thanks for sharing!

Being a pet person- I can't really put myself in their shoes.  I do try to be understanding but meanwhile softly telling that pet that they will be ok and we will be out of there soon as I sneak them a soft pat.

The experience to get you to the other side!

Showed a house yesterday and the owners had a cat that was lurking in the bushes as we went out the back door - solid black - scared the cr@p outta me and the client as it went blistering thru the undergrowth.  We finally figured out what it was when it stopped about 50 feet away to look back at us!
