This is a call to Action for both Florida RE Agents & Florida homeowners in HOAs.
There are more than 2.5 MILLION Florida homeowners and parcel owners located in Florida living in mandatory homeowners' associations. The vast majority of associations are run smoothly and have complete financial transparency with their monies and elections.
Unfortunately, it's very easy for corruption to leak into these associations. You have HOA boards that can take full advantage of the fact that most of the the members of the association assume that their investment is in safe hands with these board members running their association. In most cases, this is true. Honest volunteers doing the right thing for the homeowners.
What happens if you do have some concerns for your investment? Well, the Florida condo owners do have some protections with the state of Florida. The state will investigate three areas; elections, financial concerns and the right of a condo owner to ask for records of the association. This protection is ONLY for condo owners, NOT for Florida owners living in mandatory homeowners associations.
There is presently a bill for reform to this unfair and unjust double standard in Florida. It is for a House companion bill to S 1348. There are more than 10,000 supporters of this bill that gives the same protection to the homeowners as the condo owners. Unfortunately, there is unknown "House Leadership" that is attempting to block this bill in Tallahassee.
This is an urgent call to action to contact by e-mail and/or telephone calls to these offices. Ask them to support House companion bill to S 1348.
