I spoke to over 150 people today and over a 1,000 in a week.

I'm not bragging but would say that is a pretty good reach thanks to an online presence here on ActiveRainFacebook, Linkedin and TwitterSocial media gets people involved and interacting and the clicks add up in a day's time. Viewing how many people have read an article or blog helps to gauge where time is better spent.

While there is no replacement for face-to-face meetings, how often can you contact 100s of people in a day or potentially thousands in a week's time? You could become a motivational speaker, do television commercials or set up a seminar or workshop but as a busy agent, is that feasible? Probably not.

The power of social media for business is a fantastic work tool that reaches out to your Sphere of Influence, furthering listing information, market reports, local news, helpful hints, cleaning tips, upcoming events in the local community and holiday events. Having a strong online presence also comes with a few rules of etiquette to maintain a healthy balance such as:

  • Be your own censor before hitting the submit button. If your Grandma would be offended, think twice before posting.
  • Reply to people that have taken the time to spend part of their day with you when time allows. Address people by their names, they like to hear it.
  • Make the subject of your post something that engages and invites others to participate, it should not always be about you!

Several months ago, a family who visited the southern Utah area on vacation lost their dog and with the help of people sharing the photo on Facebook, they managed to find him alive 3 days later! Social media is a powerful tool that enhances business, so get the best use from it, reach outcreate some relationships and have some fun too.

And of course, carry on!

Social media is a huge part of our business.  We have thousands of connections across the board through Facebook, AR, Twitter, etc.  Gotta love it!

Wanda, what a wonderful reminder of the power of social media. When I read your title I thought you must have been the speaker at some big event - but social media has the same, or larger, reach. Great!

Wanda...in the right hands the social media is a great tool!! And there is a delicate balancing act to use it the right way that is fair to all.

In the wrong hands...it becomes an annoying nightmare...somewhat like telemarketing or multi-level marketing.

I had one old friend that was posting to linkedin and facebook so often selling herself I finally had to block her. When she asked why, I told her I was tired of her commercials constantly bombarding me...She simply said that is how she made her money and would see me around some day.  I had to laugh and shake my head.

Wanda, social media is also a no cost way to stay connected. The main investment is time. Which of course is extremely valuable! Learning how to manage social media and your time posting is a balancing act, but can be well worth it. Especially here on Active Rain. Thanks for the post!

Wanda, Realtors and Loan Officers should always be optimizing their online efforts to gain traction. I personally have at least 5-10 telephone conversations per day, that's Monday through Thursday. Once a person develops a structure similar to this, then the next challenge is not letting leads slip through the cracks. This is a good problem to have. Good luck out there.

Wanda,  we definitely need to act as our own sensor when we communicate in person and online. Although I proof for content and errors before submitting, I cannot tell how many times I go back and hit the edit button!

Social media is definitely a positive.  You have to wonder how many people actually are reading through it all though.  Facebook used to have a broad reach but now you have to pay to really reach out.  I think a lot of people get numb to it and simply skim over much of this without reading it.  Unless there is some funny cat video linked to it.

Tessa, #26 sums up my feelings exactly, yet, speaking to150 people in a day is monumental if they are targets in your business to buy, sell or refinance and if not, simply not an effective way of using time, IMO.

THANK YOU ALL for your comments! Doing what works for business can carry you far but you must also do the work. Social media has a broad reach and if you grab a consumer's attention, can be valuable. Blog on and carry on!

Because home is where dreams come to life!

For the longest time I felt that the social media was not a good place to gain leads from  and build a real estate business. I have recently  changed my mindset on the value of soical media platforms. The interesting point, I am actually enjoying it as  a platform to enhance my business and online presence!!! Always keep an open mind!

Bookmarked, and thanks for the suggestion.  While I don't get leads, I suspect it's because I am not participating the way I used to.

Wanda, I enjoy social media and am working hard to develop a strong online presence. However, I would take meeting one client face to face over spreading my message to 100 people I do not know. With that said, I do realize that social media can be an avenue to attract new business, and I am working to get there.
