Breaking News: The Design Review Board: Unanimously REJECTED Marina Admiralty’s Proposal to destroy a Historically Significant Property.

Breaking News: The Design Review Board Unanimously REJECTED Marina Admiralty’s Plans to destroy a Historically Significant Property “… this property is worth preserving was the message the Board sent to the developers...” The property in question being Mariner's Village was to be totally re-engineered. All vegetation including mature trees, streams and waterfalls as well as the endangered and protected species the Blue Herons would have been forcefully and aggressively removed and more than likely killed.

Keep in mind I am all for progress and improving the communities not just in Marina Del Rey but all over the world. This property was called by one of the local politicians as the Crown Jewel of Marina Del Rey and it is in needed polishing. Clearly the Design Review Board understood this and wanted the Developer to accomplish the task with care and consideration for the Natural Habitats of the Blue Herons, the safety and security of the local residents as well as to consider the additional burden of the increased traffic this would create.

The current climate of the world simply stated: people recognize that we need to share the Urban Forest. Humans and Nature need to coexist and not at the cost of one or another. This can be accomplished in harmony with good planning. There is no reason to demolish every building.

Most forward thinking developers understand that ‘Green Building', taking care of the environment and being good citizens and good neighbors would be embraced by the community. Marina Admiralty totally disregarded this concept and chose a totally different route: they took the arrogant bad developer approach, trying to bulldoze down every tree, not being considerate of the community nor their residents.  Totally forgetting that when they originally built Mariner’s Village in the late 1960’s early 1970’s they won a Landscape Architectural Award.

Needless to say, the community supported by numerous organizations such as the Sierra Club, the Ballona Institute, local grass roots organization of  Marina Del Rey, the Silver Strand Residents and of course the residents of Mariner’s Village expressed their concerns  and opposed  the project. Most importantly for not being good but rather being arrogant developers. Clearly the Design Review Board Concurred by  REJECTING  the Developer’s Proposal of 7000 sq feet of Commercial Space inside a quiet residential neighborhood and destroying this historically significant community. As well as saving the mature trees and natural habitats.

Some historical things are worth saving.

We have an 80 year old bridge that connects two towns. THe bridge is failing and currently closed. It is now a 45 min to 1 hour drive to go from town to town, it was 2 minutes!

There are groups that want to "Save the Bridge", but they don't live here and it doesn't bother them that the bridge is functionally obsolete. It isn't even a 'pretty' bridge or architecturally significant.

Coastal development or in this case re-development is unpopular. Everyone wants to be near the coast, but at what cost to the environment? Sounds like the right thing to do won.

I'm all for protection some of these special places whether of historical significance or not.  Sometimes the new world simply needs to co-exist with the old.  I struggled to find any indication of the blue heron on the endangered species list, or anywhere it's actually protected.  If it were the case any significant habitat would also be protected.

Hi Endre - while the history of Marina del Rey is not as long as some other communities, this is a signficant victory for preservatoin and promoting neighborhood spirt.      Good post.

All you had to do was write "the developers wanted a 7,000 commercial space" and that would have be it for me!  They just see the dollar signs, and they don't care about preserving anything.  I'm glad the area was protected.  Not everything has to be "trendy."  Geez, don't developers understand PROVENANCE?!?  And you're right, the area's wildlife would be killed off.  They don't understand their habitat being bulldozed.  They die off when their breeding grounds, and nesting habitats are destroyed.

I'm wondering if this is the same area that I read about several years ago - is it a wetlands area?  Either way, this is great news.

Noah, I agree unfortunately in my experience Developers are very persistent and will be back for round two.

Jane the sad part is they actually violated the Blue Heron's protection's laws and many have already been killed....

Janis this is just a setback for them

Andrew this is the first time in seven years that the developers were actually slowed down by a united front of many groups.

Lenn, cynical or not sounds to me like life experience, I have often seen the wine and dine dog & pony shows will get results with politicians. Do you remember the ABSCAM trials of the '70's??

Raymond sadly it is already way to overdeveloped, there are days to get out of the Marina might take me 20 minutes just to go 2.5miles from my home...

Aj I hope your words will be prophetic!

Michael you should see the renderings the developer came in with and blatantly announced that all trees will be cut down.....

Than, sometimes when communities wise up then historically significant places can be saved...when I lived on the east coast I remember seeing old bridges saved and new ones built next to it...again community activism is the key!

Tammy I am all for commerce and making a profit it can be done in conjunction with protecting history. Los Angeles County received a failing grade from the Historical Commission now how come Culver City, Santa Monica & Beverly Hills received an A they are near or should I say adjacent to Marina Del Rey?

Jennifer I agree man and nature can live in harmony, unfortunately Los Angeles County got an "F" for historic preservation compared to the neighboring communities of Santa Monica, Culver City & Beverly Hills who received an A rating from the Los Angeles Conservancy (3/14 LA Times report)
