It Wasn't Just Another Day on the Road...I'm Glad I Stopped to Help

It Wasn't Just Another Day on the Road...I'm Glad I Stopped to Help. This poor pouch was dumped. When I first saw him, I didn't know that. The only thing I saw was this giant black dog wandering down the middle of a fairly high traffic road. Then I saw a woman on the side of the road that looked like she was going after the dog. I figured maybe the dog had gotten away from her.

It Wasn't Just Another Day on the Road...I'm Glad I Stopped to HelpI stopped in the middle of the road. I called the dog over to my car. I had my arm outside the window and the dog came within inches of my fingers. I could tell from the look in his eyes that he wasn't going to hurt me. I called out to the woman ( I found out her name is Debbie ) coming up on the side of the road. "Is this your dog?". It wasn't, but she was from one of the area animal rescue groups, and she was trying to get the dog. The dog, by the way, is a Great Dane. He is beautiful, and he is injured.

By this time, the traffic was lining up behind me. The dog got spooked and trotted off. I pulled over. I offered to help the woman. Debbie had a couple of leashes with her and dog treats. This dog was hungry, but he couldn't be tempted to get within reach. Then some idiot comes speeding down the road. I motioned for the driver to slow down, but she didn't care, and she almost hit the dog. Then a large tractor came down the road and the dog ran off into an orchard. He was really spooked now.

Debbie, from the rescue group was ready to give up. She was going to go home and get her dog trap. Then about 100 yards up the street, the dog comes trotting back to the road. Debbie asked me to get in my car, because the dog didn't seem to mind coming up to it. I did and slowly went down the road. The dog did come up to my car again, but not close enough for me to get a hold of him.

At this point, Serena, from the Cedaredge Animal Shelter pulls up to us. She was great. She brought her dog which made friends with the dumped dog. Then she managed to trap the dog in someone's fenced yard. After about ten minutes, she came out of the yard with the Great Dane on a leash.

We had attracted a small crowd of onlookers and concerned residents. The dog had been running around for days. Everyone was so relieved when Serena came out with the dog. We all stayed quiet. We didn't want to get the dog excited. Our next challenge was to get the dog into the back of Serena's car. He didn't want to get in there. Debbie and Serena managed to load him up.

So far this story has a happy ending. The dog is now at the Cedaredge Animal Shelter where he will have his injuries looked at and taken care of. He'll have food, water and a warm place to sleep. In about a week, depending on his injuries, he will be put up for adoption. I feel really great to have played a small role in this story. I'm so happy this beautiful dog is off the street and in a safe place.

Hi, William...I don't understand why people do this. I really don't get it.

Thanks, Noah.

Hi, Silvia...I'm glad too, Silvia. This poor critter was scared and confused. He had lost all trust of humans. Now he will get cared for and taken care of. But this is one animal. There are so many others like him. It's really sad what people do to animals.

Oh my Gosh!  Who could abandon that sweet boy.  Some people ought to be left off on a deserted country road with no food, water or even a cell phone and see how they like it.  Thank goodness you guys got him and he is now safe and sound.  I sure hope someone comes along and makes him part of their happy home.

Hi, Randy...I hope he gets a forever home very soon, too.

I agree with you completely, Belinda. BTW...Thanks for the invite to move to Denver. You never know. Stranger things have happened.

What a story.  I'm so glad that he didn't get hit.   I"m glad he bonded enough with the other dog that you all could catch him.  I'm sure getting an unwilling Great Dane into a car is no easy task.

Thanks for sharing the story of everyone that took the time to get this poor dog to safety.

Beautiful story, Debbie. Believe it touches the heart of anyone who reads it. Moral of the story, even Great Danes need angels in their lives and here 'you came along.' So comforting to know this dog is safe and sound. Debbie, your photos are great in the portrayal of the story. In a way we got to know the Great Dane.

Good morning Debbie. Good for you, as you well know most would just keep driving and not get involved, but not you for sure. With your generous act you made the world just a little bit better.

Thanks for sharing this story, Debbie. It is sad to see so many abandoned animals. Many families just do not have the money to support their pets

Thanks to all of you for taking care of this very proud and beautiful animal.  And, shame on whomever dumped this "pooch".  I hope he finds a wonderful home with people who will appreciate him soon.

Thanks again, Debbie Laity!

What a great story, i am glad it had a happy ending. An owner who dumps a pet should meet the same fate. I am glad you were there to help.

If my dane wasn't such a jealous heart type, and older, I'd adopt him for sure. I've had 8 great danes (plus a litter of pups), and love the breed. What people don't realize is that they're sensitive dogs and love their people. When they get an upset, it can affect them for a while. They are expensive to feed and when they need medical attention, it costs more than for a little dog. So please, if you consider this dog, don't adopt it just because you want a large dog for the attention. Give it a forever home, and lots and lots of love.

Hi, Sondra...I'm glad you liked the story. It has a happy ending.

Hi, Jane...thanks for stopping by, and I'm glad you liked the pictures and the story.

A lot of people did keep driving by, Joe. It was a shame to see.

Hi, Roy...there are more humane ways to handle situations when you can't keep a pet. Some people don't think.

Hi, Ron...this might have an even happier ending very soon.

I tend to agree with you, Scott.

Thanks for stopping by, Jeff.

Hi, Angie...I will be willing to help you.

Hi, Debbie...I know someone will want this beautiful dog. If I wasn't traveling so much I would take him. He is a really sweetie.

You are such a good soul! That was a wonderful thing you did! I hate to hear about animals who are abandoned and injured. 'Course then I start thinking about how people treat children and then I have to turn off the thinking.

Hi, Nina, and thanks for stopping by. I can't believe that someone would do this to a dog, or any animal, or child. In my REO business I haven't seen anything too horrendous, but I've seen bad stuff. I guess bigger communities see it worse.

I'm really glad we could get this dog off the road and to safety. Right now I've taken on extra responsibilities that require me to travel or I would take this dog.

Debbie, in cruising around CO looking for localism/travel posts, I randomly happened upon this. Tears, joy, and another reason why I think you're so special! I've done the same darned thing....too many times to count, but the feeling of exhilaration/accomplishment afterwards is SO rewarding in making a difference in some sweet animal's life!
