It Wasn't Just Another Day on the Road...I'm Glad I Stopped to Help. This poor pouch was dumped. When I first saw him, I didn't know that. The only thing I saw was this giant black dog wandering down the middle of a fairly high traffic road. Then I saw a woman on the side of the road that looked like she was going after the dog. I figured maybe the dog had gotten away from her.
I stopped in the middle of the road. I called the dog over to my car. I had my arm outside the window and the dog came within inches of my fingers. I could tell from the look in his eyes that he wasn't going to hurt me. I called out to the woman ( I found out her name is Debbie ) coming up on the side of the road. "Is this your dog?". It wasn't, but she was from one of the area animal rescue groups, and she was trying to get the dog. The dog, by the way, is a Great Dane. He is beautiful, and he is injured.
By this time, the traffic was lining up behind me. The dog got spooked and trotted off. I pulled over. I offered to help the woman. Debbie had a couple of leashes with her and dog treats. This dog was hungry, but he couldn't be tempted to get within reach. Then some idiot comes speeding down the road. I motioned for the driver to slow down, but she didn't care, and she almost hit the dog. Then a large tractor came down the road and the dog ran off into an orchard. He was really spooked now.
Debbie, from the rescue group was ready to give up. She was going to go home and get her dog trap. Then about 100 yards up the street, the dog comes trotting back to the road. Debbie asked me to get in my car, because the dog didn't seem to mind coming up to it. I did and slowly went down the road. The dog did come up to my car again, but not close enough for me to get a hold of him.
At this point, Serena, from the Cedaredge Animal Shelter pulls up to us. She was great. She brought her dog which made friends with the dumped dog. Then she managed to trap the dog in someone's fenced yard. After about ten minutes, she came out of the yard with the Great Dane on a leash.
We had attracted a small crowd of onlookers and concerned residents. The dog had been running around for days. Everyone was so relieved when Serena came out with the dog. We all stayed quiet. We didn't want to get the dog excited. Our next challenge was to get the dog into the back of Serena's car. He didn't want to get in there. Debbie and Serena managed to load him up.
So far this story has a happy ending. The dog is now at the Cedaredge Animal Shelter where he will have his injuries looked at and taken care of. He'll have food, water and a warm place to sleep. In about a week, depending on his injuries, he will be put up for adoption. I feel really great to have played a small role in this story. I'm so happy this beautiful dog is off the street and in a safe place.
