New St. Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs

On the busy corner of East Woodmen and North Powers Boulevard is the beginning of a new Penrose Hospital: Saint Francis Medical Center.

I drive by it several times a day on my way to carpool or to the office. The kids are always in awe of the massive cranes swinging around huge metal beams and walls... It is an awesome experience watching the changes, day by day. We are starting to recognize it more as a hospital and less of a skeleton building.

Colorado Springs has experienced quite the jump in growth in the past few years, and we are not even ½ done growing! Within the next 20 years, Woodmen and Powers is said to be the geographical center of Colorado Springs. What a strategic location for a hospital! This is the 2nd hospital on the N/E side of town that is going up. Memorial Hospital is also putting one up just North of this one.

We are in desperate need of new hospitals as the current ones are on Academy and Downtown- nowhere near the majority of the new neighborhoods and homes in Colorado Springs that have been/are being built.

They started building the new Penrose Saint Francis facility in late 2006, and are scheduled to be done July 2008.

It is quite a mammoth sized building, with a Medical Center Tower of 350,000 s.f., 100,000 s.f. of Ambulatory services and physicians offices, and another free-standing physician office building of 80,000 s.f..

According to their website, "The New St. Francis Medical Center Campus will be a state-of-the-art, 158-bed tertiary medical center offering facilities and services to meet all medical needs of the Colorado Springs Community far into the future."

The new facility will offer a wide array of inpatient and outpatient services including:

  • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services (Large Cardiology Department)
  • Surgical Services
  • Patient Care Services (ex: Women's and Children's Services, Surgical/Critical/Respiratory Care and a full pharmacy.)

There will also be a variety of patient and staff amenities, including a chapel and meditation garden, and a Centralized Medical Records and Registration, to name just a few.

We are all looking forward to the new hospital's completion.

We used to have a great St. Francis Hospital here in Miami some time ago - the building was demolished because it sat on prime waterfront and a great development (I don't say that often) - comprised of the best architects in South Florida was built there instead.  What does this have to do with your St. Francis, absolutely nothing, except help me reminisce.

Ines- Sometimes things need to make way for bigger and better ambitions. Luckily, there was nothing here. No. Actually, it is part of a reclaimed old landfill. So, it is a great use of space. ... and we NEED more medical facilities, here. I believe that between this one and the new Memorial Hospital that is also going up, we may get a nice boost in the job market, here as well.
