Hodags Roaming the Forests of Rhinelander Wisconsin

While conducting an inventory in the Rhinelander Wisconsin area recently our newest Forester inquired "what is a Hodag" this of course led the rest of the crew to fill her with scarry stories of the numerous Hodags roaming the dark swampy areas that you find far from civilization in this remote area.

I reassured her that she had nothing to fear, we have never lost a crew member to a hodag, bear or any other critter roaming the forest.  She did survive the project without seeing any hodags, there were a few bears sighted but these were also harmless.

After the project was completed we did see a few hodags in town, the largest one right in front of the tourist information booth, shown below.

That is a creatively scarey creature!  Never heard of a hodag before.  But then again, I've never been to Wisconsin!

Bob, I suspect a hodag isn't something you want to encounter other than the one in the picture!

Hi Bob,

I have never heard of a hodag before either. It is a really creepy looking monster. I will keep my eyes open for one though.

Hodags, are kind of scary,  they are often found in areas where snipes live.  So when you are out snipe hunting, be aware there may be hodags watching you from a brushy area nearby.
