Don't Be A SECRET AGENT Man (or Woman)

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Secret Agent BearNothing is more detrimental to you building a real estate industry business or maintaining it than you being the best at what you do and no one knows it. So,

Don't Be A SECRET AGENT Man (or Woman).

As loathsome as even I have said many meetings are, start online with a presence of course, but work it to offline. Press the flesh. Think NETWORKING wherever you go. MEET PEOPLE. Talk. It is really as simple as that. DO NOT HIDE BEHIND A KEYBOARD. Civic functions, sporting events, church activities, social or play activities, shopping, entertainment venues, just GET OUT INTO THE WORLD. Volunteer, contribute, back to TALK TALK TALK with people. Pick the networking events you like. There are TIPS clubs, Meetups, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, city Planning meetings, Facebook has MANY local organizations you can drop in and just see who is there. Even Career Fairs and Toastmasters you can just see who is there.

Don't be a SECRET AGENT. Let everyone know WHAT you do, and that YOU ARE VERY GOOD AT IT. Staying in one spot is for trees. You have legs. MOVE AROUND.

Psssst.... I'm a secret agent. So true, I have to break my discomfort of networking events and get out there. I used to do a lot of it but didn't find any benefit until I realized I lost the ease of flow to discussing my business.

Gary:  I think you've been talking to my wife (she is my marketing person).  She's been after me to get myself back out "on the streets" to be more one-on-one with potential clients and referral partners alike.  Great advice, I know ... no excuses!

And btw ... memories of a great song via your title!

Great Advice!  I slip into conversation as often as possible that I am a Realtor.  It was not alway an easy thing to do but over time it has become easier.   We have to get out of our comfort zones at times!

One positive side effect of being in leadership positions is that I have been asked to speak at meetings like The Rotary Club and I get to know people. It has been a great source of business even though i am not their to speak about doing business with me. It is another off line variation of the online give people the benefit of your expertise and gratitude will come back your way.

Good post gary. We are in a people business. Technology is fine, in its place, but you still have to close with the client. I live in a comparatively small area and sell real estate around Wenatchee and about a 50 mile radius. You can reach a lot of people with technology. But you can reach many more people often by talking, being seen and being a part of the community. The personal contact helps weed out the lookie Lous too. This is an area, in my opinion, a lot of younger agents fall down in.

I recently posted something that touches on this topic http://activerain.com/blogsview/4774963/how-newbies-or-for-that-matter-oldies-can-get-business

This is one of my challenges. I'm working on my presence offline. Yes, it's so easy to stay behind the keyboard.

This is a huge challenge for me Gary Woltal - I've been very friendly in my past career field which I knew very well and had all of the confidence and expertise in!  I always told people what I did and was very proud of it - no fear!  Not so much with being a newbie realtor, even though I'm working with a seasoned professional on a Team.

I tend to text a lot as well,  however, I definitely maintain my second office in a brokerage so that I can meet everyone in person and nuture the relationships with the agents there.

Great advice today Gary.

I am here to say that this has been my #1 struggle. I know I am competent, but I am awful at self promotion. I just had my teeth cleaned, and my dental hygienist of three years just realized I am a REALTOR®. She never knew, because I never told her. I have perfectionist tendencies which creates added pressure. The struggle is real.

I know I fall victim to this. I try to remind myself to hand out 10 business cards wherever I go but I either forget or don't make the necessary effort. Thanks for the reminder!
