How many of us would ever use kits to build outdoor furniture? As long as the kit appears to be relatively high quality, then I ask myself "why not"? Building a four-foot wide Lutyens style bench last Saturday turned out to be much easier for me to accomplish than I had initially thought.
Also, these benches are of relatively high quality. Fortunately, Lewis Ginter Botantical Garden in Richmond Virginia sells these unassembled benches in boxes, and I also happened to be able to take advantage of the 15 % off "March Madness" sale available to members during last month. I really enjoy taking advantage of those member discounts when possible!
Above is my fully assembled four-foot wide black Lutyens bench that sits under porch ceiling.
Secondly, the wood used for this furniture had an environmental perk that attracted my attention. The Forest Stewardship Council happened to certify this particular wood source, so that helped me feel better that no rainforests were destroyed to produce any of these furniture pieces!
Below is a tag found in the box of bench pieces, so I think having well-managed forests with environmental considerations is wonderful. There are 10 principles that the Forest Stewardship Council follows that also are consistent with my overall general value of conservation.

Would you ever put together your own outdoor furniture? Actually, as you will see by the instructions below, the steps are fairly easy. It just takes some patience and attention to detail to notice which pieces fit together. (Somehow I also think these are good qualities for real estate professionals to have, too!) While I noticed that most of the wood pieces were labeled, a few of them lacked a label sticker. Fortunately, using some careful observation of the pieces helps.

Above are the easy-to-follow instructions used to put together the Lutyens bench.
Why assemble a wood bench at home? Here are three of my reasons:
- Do-It-Yourself or DIY projects offer a feeling of accomplishment for the homeowner.
- Products may cost less being purchased unassembled, and are easier to transport oneself or ship home in more compact boxes.
- Many unassembled furniture products have very high quality and may contain environmentally responsible materials.
Are you considering doing a project on your own like putting together a bench? Before starting any project, consider the skill level and cost required to complete the task. Remember time also is money.
If you know that the job would not require a trained professional, also consider any potential safety concerns. As long as you know you would be fully qualified and able to assemble a piece of outdoor furniture, then also consider any tools required to complete the assembly and you own skill level. As long as you follow these simple guidelines, then I would at least consider making the investment in an outdoor furniture kit!
