Why to Flush your Hot Water Heater--and How

Flushing the hot water tank is a good idea every few years. ...and its easy. Wait for warmer weather, though. Then get a normal garden hose and hook it up to the spigot you will find at the bottom of the tank. First turn off the water to the tank (a lever on the pipe, then open the spigot valve and let to empty to a drain or outdoors - which ever works by gravity in your situation. Letting it run fully open will be enough force to flush out the sediment. Then simply turn the valve off and remove the hose... turn the water back on to the tank.

Great advice for how to drain the tank. It will also make the unit more energy efficient.
