In 1934, the federal government began the Parker Dam construction project to divert Colorado River water to southern California, but neither the feds nor California got approval from Arizona to build on its land. Also, Arizona thought California was stealing its share of the Colorado River. The Arizona Governor, Benjamin Baker Moeur declared martial law. Arizona commissioned a couple of old steamboats to patrol the enemy's side of the Colorado River and the Arizona Navy was born. The Arizona force included 40 infantry men and 20 machine gunners. The U.S. secretary of the Interior, halted construction of the dam. The U.S. Supreme Court eventually issued an injunction prohibiting anyone from interfering with construction of the dam.
