My Experience With Growing an Organic Container Garden: Part Two

Wolters Realty I decided  little while back to try to start my own Organic Container Garden.  You can read part one here.   I got all my seeds started, I lost a couplWolters Realty e of seedlings along the way. The rest were doing ok.  I started early looking for options to transplant the plants to when ready. While shopping at a craft store, I came across this cute little herb planter for the kitchen countertop behind my sink, I thought it would be adorable for the herbs I was growing.  Then I saw that it was almost $50, so I texted a picture of it to my husband.  He is always saying, don't buy it, I can make it. So I decided to take him up on it. He has so many tools and machines I knew he could do it, I just figured it would take a while.

To my surprise, he asked me a few questions about what I wanted, the very next morning. I decided I wanted mine to be longer than and not as wide as the one in the store, to fit perfectly above the sink.  He had one finished the next day. Wolters Realty

He ended up staining it and that point I hadn’t really done any research on chemical leeching in the soil so I didn’t think much of it.Wolters Realty I was really happy with it and really liked the hearts. Those were his idea.

My original idea had been to use empty coke bottles. I saw it on Pinterest and figured he could make a stand for them that could be wheeled easily in and out and they wouldn’t take up much room.  Then I thought about it, what was I thinking?  Plastic is not organic.  So back to looking for an idea.  My son was home for spring break and we went to a bunch of garden stores.  Everything I was finding was plastic or made in China or really expensive.

So I searched on.

How about making newspaper pots or use peat pots.  You will need to line the bottom so it doesn't leak or water it outside or in the sink but they aren't plastic.

I am thinking of doing the same thing myself - especially with the price of veggies these days. Hope all is well with you and you are back to talking!

Cindy, I started the seedlings in peat pots and toilet paper roll pots but for a long term solution I need something bigger, so the roots can spread.

Hi Gary, Yeah they are expensive, especially organic vegetables. I am actually able to hold limited conversatons finally.  A few more days and I should be back to normal.

I have a brown thumb so I will never attempt this but best of luck to anyone who does. Love the herb planter that your husband made, what a guy!
