A Chat with Roy Kelley about Photography and Social Media

By
Real Estate Agent with EXP Realty, LLC

As a real estate broker, photographer and lover of flowers and gardens, I have always admired Roy Kelley.  On his blog, Roy consistently shares information about his area and/or real estate. Roy Kelley tulips He almost always includes one or more gorgeous flower photographs.    I origionally tried calling Roy as part of the March Cloudburst of You challenge but we ended up playing phone tag.   Yesterday, while his wife Delores was out playing golf, I finally had the opportunity to chat with Roy on the phone for a few minutes.   Not only was he nice and  sincerely willing to share his knowledge, I found him to be very inspiring.

Photography:

Roy uses a Canon Powershot  G11.   He likes it for its simplicity.    He edits his pictures with iPiccy.    (I always envisioned Roy being a camera gear junkie with lots of big lenses. Boy was I wrong.)

Amongst other places, he posts photographs on Flicker.     People needing to purchase photographs used Flicker as a source.   For example, one of Roy’s photographs was published in Country Living magazine for use in one of their articles.   Roy notes that they bought the picture from him.  However, his name is not shown with the picture in the magazine.

Social Media:

Roy Kelley Unusual flower photographRoy is very engaged in social media.   Just like most of us, he enjoys the Active Rain point system.  He is currently number 10.   On Twitter, he has 1,542 followers.   On Pinterest, he has 3,266 followers.   Roy said that his Facebook groups and his flicker account receive the most attention.   Wow!!!

If you would like to see what Roy Kelley is doing on Pinterest,  he invites you to visit and follow my Pinterest boards.

I explained to Roy that I don’t spend much time on Facebook.  I feel like need to spend more time engaging people in person.    Roy’s suggestion was to set up Facebook groups for people that participate in the same things you are interested in.     Makes sense….

Roy offered the following suggestions to manage the amount of time spent on social media:

  • Use the settings that allow your posts or pins to be tweeted or posted elsewhere.   For example, he doesn’t actually spend time tweeting yet all of his blogs and pins are automatically tweeted.

  • Periodically weed out who you are following and your friends so that you can focus on the ones that are important to you.   In other words, don’t let the unimportant information drown out the things you do want to see.

Note: All photographs used in this post were taken by Roy Kelley and are being used with his permission.

I really enjoyed my chat with Roy Kelley about photography and social media.   I plan to do a follow up post that will summarize the things that I have been learning from Roy’s blogs about using Pinterest for business.

Great recap of what sounds like a very informative on photography and social media and friendly conversation with fellow blogger Roy there Sondra. I talk to him all the time about his flowers on Facebook. Over and over you bring me back to Pinterest and with so many images I have, I need to share. The thought of weeding people out is something to consider. I have a chunk of friends of friends on Facebook I do not even know who they are. Thanks for being transparent enough to give us the inside of what you learned!

Thanks so much for your kind words. I was very nice to chat with you on Saturday morning. Many of my recent blogs have been focused on the use of Pinterest by real estate professionals.

ActiveRain bloggers are welcome to use my photographs in their blogs. Just give me credit for the photos. The easy way to use my pictures is to copy and paste them from my Facebook timeline.

Have an outstanding week and a most productive spring!

Sondra, Those are good suggestions and make sense. Do the things that work for you and that you enjoy. Photos posted on Facebook work very well as share items.

Sondra, lots of great advice from Mr. K. And I loved that Delores was out playing golf! I'll check out Flickr--I think I was familiar with it before, but lost track of it.

Do you pin to any of his boards?
