What is Home Staging? Seems Many Think it Simply Means Emptying Out the Rooms!

O.K. now that I've got your attention...

I've been looking at some of the very recent staging 'gradutates' new websites and their portfolios. This post is not about the training course they have taken as I have no idea what they are taught. They do post their newly purchased Trademark alphabets though, so I do know they have taken the training.

This post is about my perception gleaned from perusing these new web sites and the staging on display. I won't be posting examples...it is not my intention to make an example of anyone.

I recently posted on my blog about the Staging Industry being undermined by the practices of individuals and staging training companies with their marketing 'staging' as being something 'anyone can learn'. Well, judging by the portfolios I saw today...that is exactly what these stager's work looks like.

There page after page of before and afters where all that was done was remove the majority of furniture and accessories out of the room. How many family rooms do you know with only a couch and coffee table?

There could be any number of reasons for these photos:

  • one which comes to mind is due to the fact that the properties were lived in rather than vacant...yeah...but still, you'd think it would only be the odd before and after
  • what better explains it to me is many of these people do not have any concept of design fundamentals (either inherent or learned)

Simply removing furniture does not make a room staged...does not make for a transformation. At this point in time...I don't think these recent grads are ready to hit the stage running but are in need of mentoring.

Are grads 'thrown to the dogs'? Can we help them get a better start?

Where are the mentors?

If I had enough work I'd be happy to mentor. The training businesses that crank out thousands of new stagers yearly...they could help their students succeed with a mentor program.

You make a point about new graduates and portfolios on their websites.  Everyone needs to start somewhere.  I applaud new stagers that have websites with their own photos (and not stock photos).  Having said that, new stagers may not have a lot of photos of their work.  You work with what you have.

Dane,

I understand where you're coming from.  In the Prof. Organizer industry of which I am a part, we often wonder about the before and after pics.  Who knows, the pics could be of the person's own home.  As an organizer, for a while I took the 2 sets of photos but then stopped.  I didn't get to see many things at the finished stage so my before pics lacked a partner.  Secondly, I didn't post any on my website out of courtesy to clients.  Yet in all the years I have been meeting new clients, NOT ONE has ever asked to see before and after photos so I am not concerned.

As a newbie Stager, I often do consultation so don't get to see the ideas actually implemented and therefore, again, no before and after pics.  I agree with Marla that often you don't have a lot of photos of your work when you are starting out -- you feel you need to show something though.  Yet, again, no client has ever asked to see my before and afters, so who knows.

I've done 3 stages so far and somehow 2 of the before sets are no where to be found on my computer! Ack! Sometimes, it just might be something as simple as a technical error that can get in the way....

Dane, staging is an art, and you have to have an eye for it. Simply de-cluttering does not add the art factor.

Dane-I have read some of your posts on different groups in the past few days. It seems to me that you are a frustrated Stager. Sometimes we have to look out ourselves before we can judge others. There may be people just starting out and maybe their pictures and staging abilities are not the greatest yet, but I believe that everyone does try their best.

Right now I am too busy in my business to post about these concerns, but maybe I will in the near future. I hope that you become busy too.

New Stagers have to start somewhere. Believe me, a homeowner who is serious about seeking out a good Stager will know by their pictures who has experience.

I have been on your website and I do not see your before and after picture gallery. Did I miss it?

Hi Barbara  - I don't think Dane's intention was to be hard on new stagers.

Many of us are challenged when it comes to presenting a slick gallery of befores and afters.  Not all of us are photographers nor can we all afford professional photography in the early years for our portfolios.

We did go through the sites of those new grads together and we were concerned that many of the images are sending the message that decluttering is all staging is about.  My site for instance, has no staging images at present. I won't put up a gallery until it expresses perfectly what I can do.

We are a network of mentors learning to sharpen our swords and would like to extend that to newcomers as well.

Please don't get the impression that business is slow and Dane is disgruntled.  Our market is actually quite good, but Dane is passionately committed to moving our industry forward and supporting other stagers. She gives a lot her time to Active Rain in this cause, although time is certainly at a premium for her too.

She has certainly helped me rethink how my site reflects on the industry in general.  (hopefully you will see the evidence of that soon when I relaunch after our current project!)

I surely would have loved the constructive criticism and mentoring available from this group when I was first starting out.  It has changed my whole approach to the business.

Cheers,

Deb

Deb-I know how passionate Dane is about the staging industry. Some of her post are wonderful. Do not be intimidated by taking pictures of your work. Take as many as possible, you will always end up with a few good ones. I think it is so important that we show our work, it is part of marketing ourselves.

I take all the pictures that are on my website, I have not had any formal training what so ever. I just keep taking as many as I can and always end up with just a few that are good.

Good luck with you current project, I hope it is the best ever.

With Regards,

Barbara

Hi Debbi,  I too encourage you to add before & after photos on your website.  Your style, taste and attention to detail in this or any service industry is important in marketing yourself.  All my photos are of my work and taken by me.  I invested in a nice SLR camera when I started my business and am detail oriented enough to try to take the before and after pictures from the same perspective.  Too bad I'm not so good on the website editing side of things or I would be able to figure out how to change and add more than 6 photos at a time to my site without making it a 40 hour job!   Once I get some substaintial income rolling in I will hire someone to manage my site for me but for now I'm all about being on a marketing budget that allows me to spread out in lots of different directions at minimal cost.    I'm always learning something new in this business - that's what I love about it.
