If you are just getting back on to ActiveRain this morning, you’ll see that there’s something new: the domain structure. Bob, Kerrie, and the entire crew at ActiveRain are to be congratulated for the seeming efficiency of what must have been a gargantuan task of migration. I cannot pretend to understand how these things work. But since ActiveRain has over 250,000 members and thousands of new blog posts each month, doing what they did must have been like herding cattle… lots and lots of cattle.
I’m contacted quite a bit from folks in the real estate world to ask my opinion on things. Sometimes it’s agents or brokers that just need a second opinion. Other times it’s the media that wants a quote or a story. I’ve already been asked what I think about this change to ActiveRain (more specifically, the elephant in the room) and I am going to tell you my response in a minute. But, first let me back up and tell you what ActiveRain has done for me.
I joined ActiveRain in March of 2009. I knew how to write, but I knew NOTHING about blogging. I didn’t even know what a hyperlink was and that you could actually insert links into your writing. It took me about six weeks to figure out how to insert a photo into my blog posts. I had a booming local business, but it was just that: local.
Since then, I have developed three wordpress sites: one for my real estate brokerage, one for my short sale processing company, and one for my transaction compliance company. I was solicited to become a writer for Agent Genius, and have continued to write a weekly column there for at least four years. I have written a book. I have been asked to speak at countless events, and the services of my three companies have grown by leaps and bounds. It all started—the development of this platform—started with ActiveRain.
However, something MUCH more valuable than the platform also came out of ActiveRain: friendship. I cannot even begin to mention all the friends that I have made on ActiveRain. Through reading and commenting on thousands of blog posts I have established relationships with amazing real estate professionals across the nation—all of whom I can call in a heartbeat if I need something.
Issues and concerns surrounding this change are not at all an elephant in the room. Instead, I’d say they are probably just a tiny fly that you don’t even notice.
I don’t give a lick that activerain.com is now activerain.trulia.com. That doesn’t change who I am, what I’ve learned, how I conduct my business, or what I will do on the site. It doesn’t change how we can benefit from the network, and how the network can launch your career.
Although I’m not a trekie, I think it is appropriate to end with this short video of one of the most famous scenes in Star Trek history. You may want to think about how the video applies to ActiveRain, to you, and to your career.
By the way, if you are wondering about the photo it's Banksy's famous installation entitled "Elephant in the Room"
