This is what you should NOT do in a historic home in Bronxville, NY 10708!
We responded to an emergency call for the owners of this 1898 colonial home with four stories in Westchester County, NY. When we found wet walls from a two story pipe leak and water damage, our crews had to open the wall up behind a stove.
WOW! You or a business or homeowner never want a plumber or contractor to cut the studs on an exterior wall. This was a load bearing wall holding up two stories. The owners admitted that the top floor -- an artists garret / studio now has floors tilting toward the back yard.
Houses and buildings do SETTLE, but some of the homes we see have odd "fixes" from eons ago. Looking at the cast iron pipe show in the pic here, it looks like a plumber or owner cut the verticle studs on this exterior, LOAD BEARING wall when they moved out of the outhouse and pumphouse out back.

These are what I call "mongo" pipes, but they should have been brought around/in front of the studs. You lose a few inches in the room and walls, but the house will stand the test of time.
Not only did my great guys and husband, Forrest, dry out the room, the walls and wet studs in the wall, and did some mold prevention -- they also did some repair work to support the structure around the old, still working steel pipes. All's well that ends well...but word to the wise. We even got the job to rennovate and repaint the kitchen.
Make sure that any piping in an old / new home does not have foolish fixes like this, if the opportunity to look inside walls comes up! Hire some pros with experience, or call us for one of our master plumber referrals, if needed.
