Free fishing? Believe it or not, fishing isn't free in Indiana. You have to have a license for it. These fishing license in Indiana can range from $9 for a single day pass, or you can purchase an annual pass for $17. At least, that's the typical cost for a fishing license. You then have to add $11 if you want to fish for trout or salmon. Non-residential fees are an additional cost. But, did you know that Indiana Department of Natural Resources offers 4 days throughout the year that you can fish without a license (for FREE)?
Free Fishing Days In Indiana
The four free days you can fish in Indiana for free are April 19th, May 17th, and June 7th and 8th. These days allow you to fish in whatever public waters you wish without having to have a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp. This usually doesn't happen unless you are a youth under the age of 17 or were born before April 1, 1943.
The free fishing days have happened in the past. And they are celebrated in some areas with a number of activities for you and your family to enjoy. For instance, some of the locations will have fishing derbies, fishing workshops, and classes on how to cook and clean fish. There are locations in Indianapolis, Albany and Evansville. Indianapolis is offering a "Learn To Fish" workshop.
But where should you go to fish? There's always Mascouten Park which has bluegill, redear, catfish, and largemouth bass. Or you could try the Wabash (similar fish species). The Wildcat Creek has bluegill, redear, and smallmouth bass. Fairfield Park Lake 2 is stocked with bluegill, redear, catfish, largemouth bass, striped bass, and trout. Still not sure where to go to fish? Then check out the DNR's "Where to Fish" guide.
A free day to fish is intended to encourage people to buy a license so that one can fish throughout the year (for $17). This helps the DNR stock lakes, ponds, and such with fish. However, if you don't get to fish often, this is a great chance to fish without having to pay the fees for the license. If you go fishing, post a picture of what you catch!
