Can a dirty pet door affect the sale of a house?

soiled pet door

AAck! The inside of this house had granite kitchen, wood flooring and actually looked pretty good, it even smelled OK despite the fact that two large dogs lived there.

When the agent wanted feedback, I sent this photo. The agent thanked me for the visual and forwarded to the sellers.

My buyers were left with the impression that the exterior had "excessive damage," and made an offer on a different home.

The home remained listed for months, at a reduced sale price. Without this dirty pet door issue, I might have been the agent who wrote an offer instead of sending feedback.

Permission to post this photo was obtained from listing agent and seller.

Oh my! Looks like it could use a power wash. Shame the sellers didn't take the time to spruce up the outside. It definitely affected the outcome, in this case! Thanks for sharing your story, Barbara.

Just from that small picture the entire outside looks a little 'rough'.

Even animal lovers are turned off by homes that have OTHER people's animals in them.

Hi Barbara - those small "details" add up and do make a difference in a buyer's mind. In this case, it meant "no sale".

Wow I don't even know how they could consider letting people come in and out without having addressed that.

Hey everybody! Thanks to all for your comments, I had a few of my own when I saw the pet door from the outside during that showing.

Debbie, I felt the same way, especially because the house looked nice inside. I made sure to let the listing agent know about the issue and that I would be showing the home again soon. Agent called me back and told me the issue would be addressed.

Hi Michael!

I am going to show this house again this week. I hope I see some improvement because the price is still the same.

I hear your area is starting to see multiple offers well over list prices, could you send some of that good luck up here please?  Thanks for your comment :)

Than,

Surprisingly, it was mostly the area around the pet door that made the house look rough. The dogs must have rolled in mud and rubbed against the walls which were never washed. We have a good amount of rain here on the coast, which causes mildew to grow on the north side of the homes, especially in shady areas. The mixture of dust and grime can make a place look like it is falling down when a good power wash and fresh paint can fix the problem. Thanks for stopping by from Oklahoma!

Suzanne,

Brings to mind........"Lions and Tigers and Dirty Dogs, Oh My!" It definately has affected the sale of this home, I got a call to show it again this week. I may have an update for you if the door gets cleaned up....perhaps an offer? Wish me luck!! Thanks for your comment, have a great selling week ahead!
