Thank You!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Daytona Condo Realty, 386-405-4408

I owe a big “thank you” to all of my friends on AR for your support. A very big Thank you, indeed.

Life is full of surprises. No surgery in the plans, but how little all our plans mean...

My cardiologist did not like the results of a recent stress test, said they needed to look inside and, probably, add another stent to my collection of 3.

So, I went for catheterization. They found multiple blockages, and did not put another stent. They told me I was getting a quadruple bypass. They tried to calm me down, but I had no fear and was not worrying. After all, we are afraid of pain and suffering, but I knew that I would be sleeping through the whole 4-hour open heart surgery.

White Flowers as symbol of life

I remember in 1973 back in the Soviet Union a high ranking friend of mine gave me a copy of beautiful magazine “America”. On the cover in the glasses of surgeon Michael DeBakey you could see the reflection of the heart of the President of the Soviet Academy of Sciences Mstyslav Keldysh. It was a coronary bypass surgery…

It was so rare, that only few could do it. Either the President of Academy of Science in 1973, or President of Russia Yeltsyn in 1996…

Now, at least in the United States, it became quite a standard procedure, performed by so many surgeons around the country. I believe at 200,000 a year, it is the most common surgery in the nation. And you don’t have to be a President, or a celebrity.

Times change…

So, here I am. Everything was fine, but a surgery weakened me, and I slept a lot. Yes, I walked next day, but then needed a rest…

I am getting better every day. Getting to bed and out of bed on my own is a big achievement. On a par with walking 2 miles on the beach, which was a bit overkill, as returning was a challenge, but I am learning my limitations, and there are fewer of them with time.

They let me home at hte end of the 4th day after the surgery. Next morning I was sitting in front of the computer in the social room of our condo, because we just moved, and did ot yet have Internet in the condo, and I was working the auction. I wanted to win this property badly. It became even symbolic to me, but no symbol would make me go crazy. We won. I knew I was back... Even though I was completely exhausted :)

And yet my heart hurts. Not from physical pain. For quite a few months we do not have any word about Karen Anne Stone, who underwent an open heart surgery, I believe she was geting a new valve, and, obviously, there were serious complications. Members were trying to contact Karen Anne, few managed, but the ties were severed by her daughter, and we do not know what is happening with Karen Anne. We can't support and comfort her, give her such needed love...

When I was writing about Karen Anne, I had no clue, that I would have an open heart surgery, and go through a healing process, but what I know is that a huge part of this healing process was the support from Active Rain community. I was too weak to respond, but I had tears in my eyes, and my gratitude was and is overwhelming.

Thank you

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.  It is amazing that this procedure now is deemed "routine."  We really do have 9 lives these days.  Stay well.

So glad to hear you are doing well, and welcome back. It is amazing the progress doctors have made.  Years ago, it was amazing to watch that movie about blue babies and first open heart surgery and it's amazing how far the medical profession has come.

I also think about Karen Anne Stone often and hope she is/will be doing okay.

Jon, I hope you have a "refuah shleimah"; a complete and speedy recovery. Thank G-d, between what medicine can offer us and the way the body is capable of healing we can overcome so much! May you find yourself having more strength every day. Karen Anne knows that the AR community doesn't "quit" on one of its members. You know that, too!
