Happy Birthday Alabama Miracle Puppies!

 puppies

Last May, I found seven puppies playing in the highway in Lower Alabama. Gathered them up, took them home and fell in love. Called them the Alabama Miracle Puppies.

At the time, the vet said they were around 8 weeks old, so that put their date of birth at March 24, 2007. So.... Happy Birthday Puppies!

Of the seven... Spike, Baba, Peaches, Hugger, China, Tippy and Ziggers, I ended up with two - Baba and Ziggers. Everyone went to good homes, although poor Tippy didn't make it... baaad story that I won't share here. RIP Tippy.

So today, I'm madly in love with my Alabama Miracle Puppies and am sending good thoughts to the rest of the litter, scattered across Lower Alabama. Baba and Ziggers are as happy as they can be here in Denver and I love them more every day.

They are adorable, Jennifer!  All our dogs are found miracles and each one is precious.  They look very happy to have you as their guardian.

I can't believe someone just dumped them all. That's awful. The least they could have done was take them to a shelter. I'm glad you got to keep a couple of them.

what a great bunch of pups you got there, when I was a kid i found a box of kittens and I hate cats, but I took them to the baseball game and they were all gone in minutes.  made me feel good, but I still hate cats.  But, I could not leave the on the side of the road

They are adorable! Isn't it horrible the way dogs are just discarded like common garbage!  Raising them must have been quite something. That many pups is a handful!  I have one rescue - Buddy - a cattle dog husky mix.  He has his "issues" with other dogs as he was on his own a long time and became very territorial.  The other two dogs are females because he would never accept a male. They are from a breeder because Buddy will never accept a dog with any kind of issues....not that Buddy controls my life or the decisions I make.....Nooooooo waaaaaaay. And if you believe that, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I'm trying to sell and I'll let it go for a very reasonable price....

Cute puppies!  and I don't really like dogs...  Don't tell anybody, I'll probably get tarred and feathered.

Baba and Ziggers are tickled by all the birthday wishes! And yes, they feel lucky to have been rescued, although I'm sure that Baba (my prom queen) considers it her due. In Alabama, 'specially in the country, it's common for dogs to be unfixed, so every spring there are litters of puppies everywhere. When we found the pups, I reluctantly called some of the shelters, but without exception, they were full.

Right after I got the pups, I ran into a man who had a male (unfixed) dog who looked very much like the puppies. He seemed to think it was hilarious that his dog ran around the countryside impregnating female dogs and creating masses of unwanted kids. I thought that was disgusting...

Jennifer: Can that guy be tarred and feathered as Marlene wrote regarding herself? I can appreciate anyone not liking a certain pet (I don't like cats!), but he really is disgusting and obviously doesn't care about the well-being of the animals.

I had two German shepherds that would have been 3 years old in May. Sad story, that I will not share either.

Tara - I agree! So sorry about your pups. I lost three dogs in 18 months while I lived in Alabama - it's heartbreaking.

Those are some sweet! dogs Jennifer.  We are getting ready to welcome a 4 legged friend here.  My wife has finally given the green light now that the kids are a little older.  Shhhh. My kids don't know yet.

Why do people DO stuff like this?  Leave males un-neutered etc?  It seems so pointless - not to mention cruel. Fortunately, most males are fixed around here as are the females.  I got the timing wrong on my puppy, Tundra - and had to go through one season with her. NEVER AGAIN!  Poor dog was an emotional wreck.  I was giving her chewies for anxiety and hankies for the estrogen overload.  I am very happy that there were not a lot of unneutered males running around while I was walking her!

So you have a prom queen for a puppy as well?  I have two females.  One is a tomboy and the other is a diva. Talk about diverse personalities....they couldn't be more different. The diva is unusuably beautiful...and she somehow knows it!

Your guys are really cute. Beagle mixes??? Which one is which in the picture?

I dunno - I asked some men I knew there why and they all just said that they hadn't gotten around to it. One guy I knew had two litters of puppies at his house because he hadn't gotten either of his females fixed. I don't get it.

Baba - my prom queen - when I say that it's because she is so incredibly confident and friendly - she just KNOWS everyone loves her and behaves accordingly. It's a beautiful thing to see. I wrote a blog about the different personalities of my puppies here...

Baba is the one with the white nose. Ziggers is the one without the white nose... Their heritage is anyone's guess. Rhodesian Ridgeback? Pit Bull? Bloodhound? Shepard?

Bless you Jennifer - I am the well know "Dog Rescue" woman in my area. We have a busy highway not far away and I am constantly picking up dogs, cats and even turtles and trying to get them to home (or a new home - lots of turtles in my back yard!).

Here's my Rhodesian Ridgeback (some of your rescues look like Ridgebacks), Beko, AKA Bed Bug.

Happy Birthday, miracle pups!  I was just thinking about them the other day and wondering how they were all doing.  They look very content with their lot in life - they are lucky dogs, indeed.

Robin - I love that photo! Everytime I see a Ridgeback, I'm convinced that the Miracle Puppies are related. She's (he's?) beautiful!

Susan - The pups say thank you. And they show me every day how appreciative they are! How's your baby?

She's in NC with her dad, who is waiting on a contract to come through so he can take a new job...in the meantime, he's at the beach and she is loving life, romping around with the "alpha dog."  Her life is complete.  ;-)  I'm crazy busy, so NOT having to worry about what is in the fridge is heavenly for me.  I can work non stop and not feel guilty about it!

Yeah, the Chinese food delivery guy and I are on a first name basis.  All they have to do is see my number come up, they know what I'm ordering!  LOL  I tried stocking the fridge once when dear hubby was gone, ended up throwing everything out eventually.  I know what you mean about dog food - our freezer is full of boneless, skinless chicken breasts - I cook a piece each night for Ilse, to go with her dry food. Must scramble for people food, though.  That's truly why I couldn't live in Alabama - no delivery!
