I LOVE SPRING TIME.  The Landscaping Comes Alive.  Sadly, Much Was Lost Due To An Extremely Harsh Winter.

Spring is everywhere in the air in Lovettsville.  Bulbs are blooming.  Just drive around on weekends and observe the Lovettsville home owners tending to spring landscaping needs and making repairs to their homes.

Outdoor chores we attended to at my Lovettsville home this past weekend include:

1.  First grass cutting of the year.  It wasn't too tall, about 4.5-5 inches.  We cut it back to 4 inches.  I'm hoping that the generous length will discourage weed growth without the use of chemicals.

2.  Removing dead shrubs from the landscaping.  This is a cause of real sadness.  I lost many lovely shrubs due to the extreme and extended cold, windy winter.  If I had had just a few wonderful shrubs, I'd have covered them.  Sadly, I believe I lost about 25 good shrubs.  Primarily dwarf pines and yews.  They've always wintered very well.  This winter was extremely harsh, on folks and on landscaping.  I'm so glad to see and feel the spring sun and warmth.  I suspect that the landscaping is too.

The dead shrubs are simply got a respectful burial in a trench on one side of my lot.

The above was once a thriving beautiful Shrub.  Oh well.

NOW, we're planting new life into the landscaping beginning with Coral Bells and Gladiolus.
I love Coral Bells.  They'll be a lot smaller than the previous plantings, but the lovely color and blossoms.

Lenn- even for the few short years we lived in Leesburg, I can remember the joy of the sun, warm weather, the opening of the farmer's markets, and getting to put my orchids back outside.   Can't wait to see your "after" photos.

Just came in from taking a little time to clean out my old flower bed and put a few things in pots.  More to do but it's a start on a little color out front.

Cindy.  Good for you.  I'm not planting in pots any more.  You have to water the dang things.  Mine go right into the ground, get a good soaking and then they're on their own.  Oh, maybe I'll pay a little more attention this year.

Kathy.  I'll post them as soon as they're in the ground.

Lenn, 25 shrubs is a lot of shrubs to lose.  I only have a few shurbs and was lucky that I did not lose any.  It will probably be at least another week before the grass is ready to cut around here, and that is the official Spring kick-off for me.

George.  It was a lot to lose.  I had a seriously landscaped yard.  It's mostly that hill in front.

Yes, I suppose we're about a week ahead of you for grass waking up.

Lenn:

We just realized today that our huge Rose of Sharon that we've had by our mailbox for at least 15 years.....gone...a victim of OUR harsh winter here! Nothing like up North, but we had way to many days below freezing.

I'm in the process of a complete landscape makeover in my front yard. Killed the existing lawn (weeds) and have installed all new Zoysia sod. edging, new beds, river rock plants....you'd think I was making a fortune in real estate.

At least it will look like I do.

Hi Lenn~ My husband mowed and fertilized last weekend. We still need to remove a few dead plants too. It's very sad, but the new growth will be lovely!

Thom.  Atlanta may be south but it's also in the western part of GA.  My recollection is that you're weather wouldn't be much different from mine.  Good luck with the Zoysia.  It makes for a good lawn.

Donna.  Losing plants is sad and replacing them expensive.

Hi Lenn.  Sorry that you lost so many shrubs.  Joyce and I worked in the yard all day on Sunday and have the sunburns to prove it!  Like you, we enjoy working in the yard with our hands.
