e-Cigarettes....NOT as GOOD as They Think They Are * In RENTALS!

By

My rental application asks the question....SMOKER ______YES ______NO.....it does not differentiage between what KIND of smoking.....maybe it should.

A recent reader survey * Bisnow Multifamily found that their readers were in favor of BANNING e-cigaretts in multifamily buildings by 64%.

WHY?  Aren't they HARMLESS? Maybe not....

1)  The second hand vapor still poses a risk.  There are 10 chemicals in the e-cigarette vapor that are on the California Prop 65 list of Carcinogens and reproductive toxins;

2)  Currently, they are completely UNregulated and there are no FDA studies on the health effects on users and those exposed to the second hand vapor.   Additionally, their batteries and chargers have not been studied although there have been reported incidents of them exploding.

3) The product is not just a nicotine delivery divice (yes, there is nicotine in the cigarette)...the liquid comes in a variety of flavors which other residents may not be partial to....vanilla, bubblegum or cherries are common flavors.

Lastly, Seattle and NYC have EXTENDED their smoking bans to include e-cigaretts with other areas with similar smoking bans expected to follow their lead in adding these devices.

...so while these new e-cigaretts may appear to be harmless in their intent, they may cause as many problems as they are meant to avoid.

Interesting.  I see more and more of these smokers and was wondering what kind of health hazards they have.  Glad to see Seattle but the ban in our restaurants!

I so agree.... there are no studies showing that they are harmless. I think it is just another way for cigarette companies to re-coop the loss of all the monies from people who are trying to stop smoking. I am sure they have felt the pain from all the hordes of people who have successfully quite smoking.

Wallace, they allow these in public venues in Florida. Not a fan. A smoking ban is just that, a ban! Enjoy your day!

Conrad.....I'm a firm believer of better women through surgery; however, the "flavors" are what get me....why not just have a tobacco flavored e-cig?

So if there is no problem with the "exhaust", seems to me that folks simply need something to sucK on.  They might try their thumb.  Works for the innocent.

I originally thought of them as LARGE pacifiers when I saw them on TV....just blue light at the end.

Being a smoker myself and having converted to e-cigs last new years, helps me cutting down and eventually will stop completely. I am down to 6 mg now but that is another issue. it is true that they do not stink up the place the same as a regular cigarette does but still, they should not be allowed if the owner does not want a smoker as a renter. Wish me good luck!

I like Lenn's comment. Sucking on your thumb may offer fewer health risks and will not be a problem for the landlords.

Wallace- I read that exposure to the liquid that is in them can be toxic. Imagine if our little ones got hold of them.
