Earth Week, Tree Planting, Production Hand Planting.tree planting

This week in honor of Earth Week I will be posting four blogs on Tree Planting this first one is of a hand planter planting forest trees in a production setting, the second one will be another production crew planting in a field with a tree planting machine, the third will be how to hand plant a bare root seedling, and the fourth will be how we plant individual trees in town or a yard.

This first planter is a production hand planting crew doing something that most of us Foresters do when we are young and energetic.  Though we quickly learn that it is better to be the guy or gal who is inspecting these planters to ensure that the job is done right.

Enjoy the videos...

This second planter is part of a production hand planting crew doing what we call Under planting, which basically means that he is planting shade tolerant seedlings in a shade intolerant forest, this will allow the forest to convert from a species of trees such as Aspen which needs to be clearcut to regenerate to a shade tolerant species which only needs occasional selective thinnings to remain healthy and regenerate naturally.

And this one is good for a few laughs...

Good morning Bob. I love seeing new seedlings being planted in areas where they are needed. It is always surprising to me how quickly they start filling in.

Bob - We have just had a large replanting our area around a reservoir.  The trees were devastated by the hurricane Sandy.  The area has been cleared and looks like the first video.  Now new trees are being planted.

We have a huge area of trees around our home, and that is one of the major reasons we purchased where we did.  It provides a great deal of amenities from shade, water rentention to wildlife observation.  Great post, Bob!

Bob, these posts & videos are a wealth of information that I had no idea existed.  Wow is my only comment because I feel speechless.

I do remember helping my middle school students celebrate the first Earth Day back in 1970.

You have convinced me that planting trees by hand is definitely hard work. I do not think I would last more than a couple of hours.
