GETTING TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS WHEN YOU’RE MOUNTAINS APART

One of the greatest parts of living in the Colorado mountains is the privacy it provides and the space and views we get from being a little bit above the cities below.

But how do you meet people when your driveways are miles apart? No morning wave as you pick up your newspaper or quick chat at the bus stop when you drop off the kids, so how do you build a community and get to know people when you’re so far separated. Here are a few tips to get your social skills on track even when you’re out of physical reach.

 1)     Go virtual. Think of this as “Welcome to the neighborhood 2.0”. NextDoor.com is private social network just for your neighborhood. This is a great resource to connect with neighbors and can be limited to be reserved just for you and your neighbors. With lots of options available to get your neighbors involved, you can be sharing info, and building relationships in no time.

2) Attend HOA meetings. While this doesn’t sound like the most exciting thing to do on your Wednesday night, it can be very helpful for reasons other than voting on what color to paint the pavilion. Speak up and make your presence known!  If you have kids you can also get involved in the PTSA to meet other parents.

 3)     Start a monthly activity/play group. This can vary wildly depending on what stage of life you’re in and/or what interests you have but it will no doubt be a good way to get this started is by posting a flyer in a  common area (community mailboxes, clubhouse, etc.), or by simply leaving a flyer in peoples mailboxes yourself. Ideas include book clubs, running/jogging club, poker night, dog walking group, or just a monthly potluck in an outside park.

 4)     Talk to your local realtor. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to be buying or selling a house. By the nature of their jobs, they know people in the area and can get you in touch with others in your area that have similar interests as you.

5) Join a meetup Group. Chances are, no matter where you move to, there are most likely many existing  groups for various interests such as the Evergreen Book Club, Evergreen Cow Girls, Mountain Bikers. You can also search for groups with http://www.meetup.com/.

6) Learn a new sport (or just practice one you already know). /even in you don’t fancy yourself much of an athlete, there are plenty of things you can get involved with a local Rec Center such as Yoga Classes, Pilates, a walking group and more.
