Earth Week, Tree Planting, Hand Planting Instructions
This week in honor of Earth Week I will be posting four blogs on Tree Planting this first one is of a hand planter planting forest trees in a production setting, the second one will be another production crew planting in a field with a tree planting machine, the third will be how to hand plant a bare root seedling, and the fourth will be how we plant individual trees in town or a yard.
It is nice to have a planting machine, especially for the big jobs but sometimes hand planting is the best solution.
We choose hand planting when we just have a few thousand trees to plant, when they are in a very remote location, or when we are underplanting in an established forest, like in the first blog in this series.
This diagram illustrates the quickest technique to get lots of seedlings into the ground quickly and correctly. Whether you are using a planting spud, a maddock, or a shovel, the key is to get them in quickly, right side up, eliminating all the air pockets, and J rooting.
And remember, work fast, we expect you all to plant 1500 trees per day.
