Stop the Insanity - How to Prevent Birds from Striking Your Windows!

Let’s Be Kind to the Birds – Stop Window Strikes!

Next to cats and other birds, the biggest killer of birds is window strikes.

There are a variety of reasons for these strikes, and next week I will post about a program called Lights Out! Don’t miss it.  It has some interesting facts and information about what cities are doing to prevent migrating bird deaths from window and other strikes.

I am going to give you some tips here to prevent window strikes.

I am also going to give you a link to a site called Birdwatching that has great products, and I will let you know that my favorite is one called Window Alert.  You will find it there in the product section.

That said, here are the tips to help you prevent the apparently dead bird on your deck patio or picture windows…any glass surface for that matter.

First, move the feeders either well away or very close to your windows.  Either strategy will not allow them to build up the momentum to injure or kill themselves by striking a window either because they perceive a threat to their territory or don’t realize that there isn’t a way to “fly through” into the house.

Close curtains or partially shut blinds to stop the idea that they can fly into the building.

Move your houseplants away from the windows.  They may be after a place to perch or a tidbit to eat.

That was easy.

Now, check out Bird Watching for more information.

And, thanks for your assistance in stopping the insanity!!!

Best, Ron

I recently had a gigantic hawk fly into my screen.  He was actually after my cat.  He was stunned and fell to the ground, but flew off before I got to him.  Any ideas on keeping that from happening.

WE have had birds try to fly into our house from the woods nearby.  I will give some of these products a look-see and we will move the houseplants to the windows with blinds.  Thanks!

Good afternoon Ron. I didn't know most of this but I am not a bird fan. I was attacked as a child and then again about 10 years ago.

Thankfully, I have not been attacked by a bird....although the house was by that robin who wouldn't quit pecking the window a couple of years ago....until we got those decals.  Now, if he is still alive, he passes us by!

Great advice Ron, though a few neighborhood cats may be disappointed to find less stunned birds below the area picture windows.

Ok but how to you stop a crazed oriole from deliberately crashing into your car window.

There has been one attacking the neighbors car for 2 seasons now.

Thanks to our two guard cats, birds keep a respectable distance from the house!

Thanks, Ron, and you've made me feel much better about one of the hummingbird feeders I have mounted to a window. I have three feeders total out for the little hummers, but this one is actually on the window and the other two are in the trees.

Debbie, my mother also used to have a hummingbird feeder attached to a kitchen window.  They used it frequently, and she had lots of company for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fred, thanks for the comment.  We never allow our cats outside.

Kevin...same concept.  When he notices the bird attacking, put something in or on the windows.  He sees a reflection of another oriole and thinks it is invading his territory.

Bob, we are fortunate not to have any cats in the neighborhood that are OUTSIDE cats! And, with nearly 30 homes on the road, that is a pretty good number!

Li, thanks!

Suzanne, woodpeckers and robins seem to be the worst offenders around here.

Sheila, that would be terribly frightening, and I understand your aversion to the modern dinosaurs!

Don, it can't hurt.

Tammy, I don't think that decals or much of anything will stop a hawk.  Thank goodness the screen was there to protect your cat!  I would have had heart failure seeing that!

Hi Ron -- and how do you propose to stop me from running into the sliding glass door?
