Today is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day

For most of us animals are either a significant part of our lives or they are not. For those of us whose animals make us better, no incentive is necessary and for those who have never known the blessing of having an animal in their lives nothing may make them understand. This post then is for those who may be ready but not know how to go about it. Shelters are full, and dogs and cats die every day waiting to be saved. Shelters have all manner of dogs and cats, puppies and kittens. If you are unsure, go to a shelter or rescue group and ask them to help you determine what kind of pet would work in your life.

Never, ever buy from a pet store. All animals in stores are the by products of Mills where their parents are caged 24/7 in overcrowded small crates and forced to breed until they can't anymore, and then they are murdered or worse. Shelters and Rescue Groups do what they can but because some people don't spay and neuter there is an over-population, and thousands of animals are euthanized every day.

You can make a difference by adopting from a shelter or rescue group and make room for at least one other animal to live another day. Think about it and change a life forever. Not only will the animal thank you for the rest of its life but you will be enhanced in ways you can't even imagine.

Yes I agree buying a shelter pet is a great option! Shelter pets seem to have a loyal heart and are forever thankful to their owner.

Our local "pet store" is not typical.  They do sell lots of cool stuff for pets, but beyond the fish and turtles and lizards the animals from from the Animal Rescue Foundation.  ARF sends in volunteers for feeding and cleanup and walking and petting daily. The owners of the store also love and pet them.  Mostly it's cats there and dogs on the weekends and only during store hours.    Our local shelter just got a great addition and is having their ribbon cutting on Friday too.

Good morning friends and thank you for stopping by and leaving your comments and offering your support: I really appreciate it.

Hello Marilyn. There is no doubt about it. It really isn't buying however it it making a donation to allow the shelter or rescue to continue it's work. I have always had rescues from shelters or groups, and they know you have saved them and are grateful always. Thank you.

Hi Tammy. Pet stores that sell are different. Yours sounds like a place we in NJ worked from that gave us space to show and adopt out our cats and dogs.

Hello James. I know you have two, I have three. It just is the only way to go. Thank you.

Sheila
