If a picture is worth a 1000 words, what's yours saying about you?

If you're like me you have multiple social media accounts, a website (or two) and email customized to your brand.

What's the one thing that is recognizable across all of our accounts? The one thing that says this is YOU.

Your photo. From Linkedin to Facebook, your photo is the icon and image that follows you everywhere. Some of us even use a photo on our business cards.

Photos are getting more important in social media - Pinterest and Instagram are hot hot hot because they are photo based.

I picked up a Lucky magazine recently and found some tips and tricks to take a great selfie. If you know what you're doing a self snapped shot can be the quick and painless way to go.

  • Keep the background behind you uncluttered. Neutral is better. Stand against a wall or in my case, something light like window shutters.
  • Hold your camera horizontally and tilt it down about 45 degrees. Makes your body look better.
  • Shoot your good side. Take a couple of snaps from either side of your face and choose your good side.
  • Always have light shining ON you not from behind. Light tends to even out our skintones. Natural light is best. So stand facing a window when shooting your selfie.
  • Keep your arms down by your side if possible or out of camera range. You can always crop them out later if needed.

I would asmiling agent 2dd a few more ideas. Think about what you're wearing. Something light near your face is always flattering. Color is good too. Nothing too distracting though. Solids are best.

Also let's stay away from arms folded or hands near our face. If you're having your photo taken by someone else try to strike a natural pose. The idea is to appear approachable and friendly - not intimidating! Take more photos than you think you need and don't be afraid to ask opinions of friends and family as to which one is the most flattering.

Last but not least, your best accessory is a smile. Open or closed, a smiling mouth is essential to showing your true personality.

If you're like me and you hate having your photo taken, I understand. But your public bio photo should be up to date. Don't make it hard for clients to recognize you.

You'd be surprised at how powerful a tool your photo can be to gaining trust and acceptance. A great photo is a key marketing tool. Especially when clients are trying to decide if they want to do business with you!

I use the same photo on all my social media. I work with a lot of out-of-state buyers. They are frequently mentioning that the reason they called is because of our friendly faces. We didn't use a professional photo. My daughter took the photo of us sitting on our front steps. I love it and so do my clients.

Tammie, I think your photo is key to getting clients to want to meet and work with you. I agree, the best ones are not professional but candid and friendly!

Good morning David! No worries. Glad you're busy. Busy is good.

Tessa, in my early years I never used a photo, but my second managing broker gave me no choice, and glad she pushed!

I guess I'm going to have to join selfie-nation and re-examine my photo at the many sites I've posted it over the years. It's possible a couple sites, who know where some of them are now, have me in a leisure suit.

Tessa, we have an in-house photographer who's done a good job for us.  He's doing some new shots for our website that are casual and relaxed...I like them much better than the very first "professional" photos I used from years ago.  My current photo (the B&W) was taken by my broker...I'll probably keep it a little longer.

Joan, your photo is perfect. You have a great smile and it looks like you!

I think you're covered Chuck. Leisure suits have been out long enough now they're back in.

Nick - I like B&W too. It seems to cover a multitude of sins! That said, it's easy to get comfortable with what we have unless we think we can do better. My profile photo is actually a selfie I took in a hurry in front of my living room window. Much Photoshopping later... I'm glad I took the plunge and updated the one I had been using.

Tessa, I am not a fan of people standing in front of a brick wall to have their picture made. Many people in my office do that to get a quick shot.
