Does this home have a secret room?

Does this home have a Secret Room?

I had a buyer interested in a home in the Woodstock area.  After the buyer looked at the home a second time, he felt that there was an area of the home on the main level next to the Master bedroom that he was missing in the showing of the home.

It felt a little strange to call the Listing Agent of the home to ask, "Does this home have a Secret Room near the Master bedroom?"After calling the sellers, the agent got back to me to confirm that there was a small room off the Master bedroom for both hiding valuables and for security purposes.  The entry to this Secret Room had to be accessed from a small door in the back of the closet.

The photo to the right also shows a secret area that most homes do not take advantage of; under the stairs.  In many cases, a door to this area under the stairs could be an eyesore.  This would be an ideal spot for hiding a gun collection, valuables or for someone downsizing and just needing additional storage.

I also think that it's just cool to have a secret spot in your home that no one knows about!

Secret rooms have many uses. A builder in this area use to install a dummy wall all the way across the master bedroom, so there was 2 '-3' hidden room that was accessed from inside of the closet. In another case, I stumbled across a secret room in Leesburg that had large eye hooks screwed into the wall studs with handcuffs hanging from the eye hooks, and the room also contained some leather items, whip, tri-pod, etc. I wonder why they didn't mention it in the MLS?

Laura, I agree that having a secret room can be a real plus.  Once, I had a seller that only allowed me to say that there was a secret room, but not divulge its location until we were well under me that makes sense.

That would be so fun.  I would love to have a secret room. I can see why the seller would like to keep it a secret too.

One time I inspected a rectangular shaped home with an "L" shaped basement.  There was a "room" in one corner but there was no acess at all---nada.  Seller supposedly knew nothing about it and I never did hear what was in it.  No windows at the exterior either.

Laura, I agree that having a secret room in a house would be very cool!  There are so many ways to make this kind of room happen and to access it!

Secret rooms are very popular with the wealthy folks in South America.  I have been into a couple of McMansions here in Pinecrest with secret rooms.  These rooms actually would be nice to have during a hurricane.

Last month I closed on one of my listings that had a built in dresser in the master bedroom (very popular here in the 50's and 60's).  Before closing the Seller showed me that what looked like the baseboard at the bottom of the dresser was a secret drawer - cool.

I really want one of these!

Amazing.  I haven't seen many homes with a secret room.  I wonder what made your buyers think there was a secret room in the house in the first place.

Laura, under the stairs is a great area for valuables, and if the contractor can provide and opening area that wouldn't be exposed, you know something that would have servos and operate by a hidden switch.   Seriously larger homes can conceal safe rooms easier than smaller ones.   Depending on the water table a room below the house would provide a safe room for valuable storage or ?

A real safe room should have an access to the exterior through a tunnel a ways from the house... now that would be cool.   I use to live in an area of older homes in the Northwest, and these old Victorian and Tudor type homes would have tunnels from the house leading down to a second garage which as a kid always thought pretty neat.

How cool is that!  I'd love to have a secret room in my home.  However, it would need to be padded, so I could perform Primal Scream Therapy

I would love to have a secret room in the house. I should see if there is any space beneath the staircase.

Laura, I never sold a home with a secret room. I can see where it could be beneficial.

I've heard about these, but in 22 years have not yet come across a home with a secret room... oh wait, maybe it was so secret I just didn't know about it!

I wonder if all houses have one but the "secret" has never been disclosed Laura.  :)

This sounds like it may be a good feature to have.

Laura- my husband built a hidden gun case in our study when he turned the closet into a bookcase that held a television and files on the bottom.  We had to search for the right "handle" that wouldn't look like a handle.  It held some of his hunting rifles, some of my silver, and we had an alarm on it.  I loved it!

Laura, that is really cool. When I was a child, there was a hidden space that you could access through our closet. My mom used it for additional storage, but it was a great place for my sister and I to play.

What a sharp buyer to pick up on something like that.  That should keep all of us on our toes!
