Cute Little Striped Birds Taking Over My Neighborhood

Killdeer Shorebird Species Not Near Water

Cute Little Striped Birds Taking Over My Neighborhood

This shorebird you can see without going to the beach. They are graceful plovers common to lawns, golf courses, fields and sometimes even in parking lots. They run on the ground in short spurts and seem to stop to check their progess. They prefer insects popping up so always on the lookout. If they are startled, they will fly off in a circular motion but not too far but move out of the line of percieved danger and then start walking on the ground again. They have a loud screeching sound and move around at night for all to hear.

They like to show up in my yard and make noises about midnight. They always seem to be in pairs but maybe that has to do with the spring season?

Here is the mate across the street calling to her but I think she prefers the flowers.

Hi Kathy,

They are so cute and really let me get quite close so they must be a little domesticated. I just think they are so sweet and I love their markings.

Hi David,

I have to say with all the Red Hawks and Owls hanging around here, any bird that can survive must have some smarts. I see the hawks grabbing pigeons all the time. 4 or 5 will be sitting on the lightposts with their heads down and the hawks just fly in and grab one. I guesss they think if they can't see it coming, it won't happen.

Hi Mark,

You are so right and I would be sad to see them picked off. At my old house, I had Morning Doves that mate for life and hang out in pairs all the time and have 4-6 nests of birds annually so once a hawk swooped down and grabbed a dove off my fence. The birds in the neighborhood are always singing and chirping. At first I heard a lot of screaming (never had heard birds scream before) and then all was quiet. They must have hid in the trees for 1.5 days as it was so quiet outside that it was eerie. I sure hope these little birds survive.

Hi Donna,

I just hear them once in a while and they are in the front plus our bedroom is at the back so it doesn't bother me. Perhaps it is spring and mating season too.

Hi, Kristin...thanks for sharing your great pictures. They are wonderful. I fish a lot and see Killdeer here on the banks of the rivers I fish. I guess they are looking for bugs. Our Killdeer look just like your Killdeer.

Hi Debbie,

Aren't they just the cutest little birds with their stripes and skinny legs. I really like fishing and am glad to hear you do it too. My dream is to fish for salmon in Alaska.

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for stopping and the pretty colored geraniums are lovely and seemed to attract the birds.
