Cinco de Mayo has come to be a celebration of Mexican heritage & culture with its roots going back to the American Civil War. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day (Sept. 16) as many believe, but rather a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla May 5, 1862 with Mexico's victory over the French armies.

Chuck-Cinco de Mayo has more meaning to the people of Puebla, but for the most part is ignored by the rest of Mexico. It is however, an official holiday in Mexico, but not a national one...not sure of the distinction....I don't really care, just keep the Margaritas flowing!
