You might think your house smells good, but the buyers might not

As pointed out in the original blog below, each person's nose and brain process scent/smells differently.

You may think the cologne you are wearing makes you smell wonderful; however, the person next to you on the plane may be suffering in silence.

Additionally, you may think your home smells welcoming by using the sprays, melting pots, insence, etc. but your visiting neighbor may think otherwise and cut their visit short.

The next time you get ready to spray/apply a scent.....you may want to think how it might effect others.

No, this is not another post about pet odors or even smoking in your house.  This is about those lovely scented candles that you think smell awesome.  Just don't do it.  No plug in scented flavors either.

My Donald and I went out to dinner and a concert Friday night.  It would have been a lovely evening, but right now what I'm doing is nursing a migraine.  So I'm medicated and I have a cold wet washcloth on my head.  I did manage to cook Donald dinner, but I didn't eat it.  WHY?  Well our server at the restaurant we choose wore a bottle of perfume and that smell triggered my migraine.

My sweet Donald went to the hostess and asked for a new server and politely explained why. The hostess was super sweet and relocated us to an entire different section of the restaurant, but that server must have been a bit miffed because she marched right over to ask why our problem was with her.  As it turns out, we should have left because the food wasn't that good, and she continued to walk past my table a few more times... enough that 48 hours later the migraine is in full swing.

I'm sure she thought she smelled nice when dabbed (okay maybe poured) that perfume on herself.  It made me stop and think about all the times I've gotten a headache when showing property over the years.  I've also had buyers who have walked in and said... "nope, we can't see this one".  I've found as many as ten different flavored candles lit around a home.

If you want to make your home smell good to buyers... just clean it.  Clean smells good.  And I don't mean make it smell like pine sol, just clean.  A clean home with no "scents" at all is what buyers like to see.  Don't distract them from trying to see your home with smells.

That cute little Irish Pub we went to Friday night will forever be known to us as the "headache place".  Don't let your house be known as the headache house or the stinky house or the smelly house. That chocolate cake candle might smell great to me, but it may make a potential buyer sick.  The smell of no smells and clean is the perfect house smell.
