Attention all Rock Hounds!!! Garnet Hill - Right Here in Wake Forest!

OK - Ya gotta admit - I give you some pretty good ideas for things to do in Wake Forest - well, hold on to your hats - here comes one of the most unusual and unique things to do in My Back Yard......

Just down the road off Hwy 98 there is an exposed vein of garnets.  FREE for the taking!  There are literally billions of carats of this gorgeous purple/red semi-precious gem waiting to be found!  All you need is a hammer and chisel and you are good to go!  If you go after a heavy rain many of them can easily be worked out and most times they are virtually "free" due to the erosion caused by the rains.

To get to the site from US1 Raleigh (Capital Blvd.), drive north towards Wake Forestand exit right at the Highway 98 interchange, make a left at the bottom of the ramp (McDonald's in the corner), and go exactly 1.9 miles, the cutface will be to your right.

To know WHERE to dig I suggest you read this highly informative piece written by H. Kent Craig.  He give tips on mining, which areas you can and CAN NOT go, what to look for and what to expect.

Now, how's THAT for an afternoon of adventure?

Always something happening in My Back Yard....

Leesa, I always wanted to do this, but the area you mentioned... is it public property?

YES - the exposed face is on a public right of way!  The land that the "hill" is on is owned and there is a house down a private road - but, where you actually can find the stones is a public right of way.  Common courtesy such as no littering is expected.

This sounds like so much fun. I have this vision of hundreds of people fighting for pieces of garnet. Do a lot of people go there to mine? Great info.

Wendy - Well, there aren't hundreds of people BUT there are enough that if you don't know what is going on and you drive by and see all the people climbing over the rock you wonder what the heck is going on.  It is in NO way advertised.

I have read about this but wasn't sure just where in NC it was. Since garnets are my birthstone and they come in all colors - how can I lose if I dig up a couple?? All I have to do is get to Wake Forest!

I plan to get to NC sometime to hunt gems.  Seems like there are many kinds there.  I watch the Cash and Treasures Show on the Travel Channel.  I was rock hunting today in fact.

Karen - Seriously, if you ever come this way, let me know - I will be glad to show you around!

Craig -  I'll let you know - hopefully will go over there next weekend.  It is funny to see all the cars and people - very quiet little secret!

Bonnie - Would love to see you here!

Carol - We have the garnets here and emeralds in the mountains - pretty darn cool!

I'm an earth science teacher and would love to know where other places to get good samples of rocks/minerals are in this area. Any other suggestions?

Bob - this post was written over two years ago - at that time the link did indeed take you to an article written by H. Kent Craig.  As to what happened to the article since this post I do not know.
