Why are the soap dishes falling out

of the shower walls?

I have asked this question of the management of an apartment community many times over the last few years, and have gotten no answers. In repairing the soap dishes I have been able to draw a few conclusions.

Reasons why is your soap dish coming off the shower wall?

  • The wall is wet and crumbling
  • The soap dish was not installed correctly
  • Improper adhesive
  • Poor mix of grout
  • Too much weight
  • Used as a grab bar

Based on what I have seen in repairing and replacing soap dishes in Sacramento, these are the most common reasons for soap dishes to fall out of the tile walls. The reason why yours fell out may be one of these. If you need help in the repair of your shower walls in Sacramento, contact a local contractor experienced in this sort of repair.

You could be right Brian.

That does sound like a mess Chuck. Hiring a professional may be a great way to get it done right the first time.

I have never heard of these things being removed Rob, they are a problem at times but people want them!

Pulling the soap dish off the wall does seem like a obvious choice Travis.

Coffee cup holder???  hahahaha
There are many things wrong with that Mike.  :)

It must have gotten loose somehow Lyn.

Sacramentians do appear to be clean people Jim.  :)

It is a pretty easy repair in most cases Kimo, but finding the reason will help in preventing it from happening again.

I don't think people realize how much pressure is put on the soap dish when doing this Linda.

Kat - I guess you would have to grab onto whatever is available at the time right?

Did you consider adding wood backing just in case you changed your mind about adding grab bars in the future Ed?

If they are going to be replaced, a professional may have more experience in replacing these soap dish failures Bruce.

There are certainly more options for this today than in the past Rod.

Installation technique could have been a part of the problem here Joe.

Funny you should say that Tom, the new dishes do not have the bar for the wash rag like the original.  :)

If it came out easily Jill, your timing is great. It would have been a problem soon.

Nobody will admit to being a part of the problem Scott, "It just fell off!"  :)

Tom, loose grout around a recessed soap dish, can create a significant leak.  I have seen pinholes in grout cause enough damage to warrant replacing large sections of tile and wall.

I always learn to much from you posts.  I had not really given much thought to soap dishes that are falling of the wall. Very interesting indeed.

Water behind the tiles can escalate into greater problems Sharon.

I hope that I never have to experience it personally Joan, but it does happen.  :)

I would imagine that repairing soap dishes in a bathtub is a relatively easy project, so that is the good thing. The bad thing is it sounds like this is happening a lot, and in an apartment unit, that means a ton of bathtubs.
