Planning to move to a new home, and want to “lighten” your move? Or do you just want to get rid of years of accumulated stuff?
Hold a yard sale! It’s a great way to get rid of clutter while also making a little cash! Here are some tips:
Signs. Have large arrow signs on the main streets. Remember to be a good neighbor and remove the signs when done.
Pricing. Price everything, so you can focus on your job of selling rather than answering a lot of “10¢” questions. Even better, group together all items of the same price, and place them all on the same table. For instance, you could have a $1 table and $5 table.
Neighbors. Get other neighbors to join you. You’ll get more buyers, and save on ads. The neighborhood kids can even have a lemonade stand.
Timing. Be ready early! Early bird shoppers will be there before you open...like it or not.
Merchandise. Clean all items the day before. It will pay off with better resale prices.
Organization. Group items into categories, such as kitchen, toys, books, and children’s clothes. Have a mirror available for trying on jewelry, hats, shoes, and coats.
Space. Spread out. Be generous with space for your merchandise and give your buyers plenty of room to move around.
Kids. Allow your children to sell their used toys at a separate table. By making their own money, they can learn valuable lessons about finances, shopping, and spending.
Change. Have plenty of small bills and change available. Keep extra money inside the house, and take large bills out of the cash box frequently.
Results. Keep your prices low. Buyers expect a bargain. Your goal is to sell everything, so you don’t have to haul it back in the house!
Have Fun. Even though a yard sale can be a lot of work, you’ll enjoy the outdoor time. You’ll also get a cleaner house, a little extra cash, and perhaps get to know your neighbors better!
