Use Your Words!

                         - Famous Quote from Moms everywhere!

Didn't your momma every tell you that communication was everything?

Again, I heard it today from a realtor: "I referred my sister to a loan officer that I used to use all of the time. They picked up the phone and told my sister that they were too busy to talk. My sister mentioned that I, the realtor, asked her to call. The loan officer rudely asked what she needed.  My sister stated that she had worked on all of items on her credit report and wanted to talk with her about them.  Loan officer stated that she was not the credit department and couldn't help her."

uhhh......anyone have a comment?

I got to write up the application for their home purchase instead of the loan officer. All it took was 2 weeks of coaching the client through the process and showing them that I cared for them, their goals, and had time for them.

Lessons learned:

     1. Don't pick up your phone if you are too busy.

     2. Don't tell your income source (the client) that you don't have time for them.

     3. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Take your hat off and put the credit department hat on if that is what is needed in the moment.

     4. Be nice, cordial, courteous, and polite. Don't ruin my day because you had a bad one.  You don't have permission to do that.

Communication is Key! May we grow in our communication skills daily.

My most favorite is the ones that talk too much and have to tell me they can't talk now because they are . . . at the beach, attending their daughter's soccer match, are just walking into the Schnitz.  Who cares?

I hope you will not be using that loan officer again. Referrals are the best source of business for anyone in Real Estate or mortgages, to treat one that way is unforgivable. Communication is key, every customer is important and deserves your best service.

Good morning Mike. A well deserved featured post and no truer words can be spoken. You are so right about each time someone calls you, they should be made to feel, they are the only client that you have. I'm proud of you!

Yikes.  I had a client once who fired her mortgage company in the middle of a transaction. They weren't responding to her calls/emails, weren't doing what they said they would do, and were generally acting too busy for her transaction. So she fired them. And she closed soon afterwards.

Those who care about their clients and provide excellent service will win.

Great reminders of how not to use our words. Sometimes it's best to let the voicemail pick up and return the call. What horrible customer service. It doesn't sound like he/she will have to worry about future business with such attitude. I guess they don't subscribe to the philosophy "I'm never too busy for referrals." Thanks for sharing.

Mike, good information.  Anyone who is too busy to properly completely answer their client's questions should find other work.  We are involved in the one of the three largest events in peoples lives.  They deserve our best attention.
