Hotchkiss Rated as a Top Small Town in Colorado. This small mountain town in Delta County keeps some good company in being ranked as one of the state's top small towns in which to live. The ranking was put together by citiesjoural.com.
Hotchkiss was ranked 11th out 12 small towns in the state. Also included in this list is Glenwood Springs, Aspen and Telluride. So Hotchkiss is running with some pretty well known towns that tend to cater more to the rich and famous. It's likely that Hotchkiss would have rated higher, if there was a ski area nearby.
While this sleepy little mountain town may be competing against some more well known competition, catering to the rich and famous isn't what this town is all about. Hotchkiss is an agricultural based community. Organic vineyards and orchards dot the landscape. The population is less than 1000 people. It's sits at about 5300 feet above sea level and has wonderful year around weather...not what you might expect of a mountain town in Colorado. Winters are fairly mild and the summers can be very warm, but the nights cool off nicely. The climate, along with some very good dirt, make this a great place for fruit growing. From town you can see the West Elk Mountains. These peaks make a beautiful backdrop as you head east down the town's main street.
Hotchkiss, CO is also becoming known for it's more creative side. Many artists, craftsman, writers and musicians call this area home. The Cremery Arts Center highlights and supports these local artists.
Hotchkiss is rated as a top small town in Colorado in my opinion, too. I may be a bit biased, because I love this area.
I've lived on Colorado's Western Slope for over 23 years. I love this area and all it has to offer, and I enjoy sharing what I know about my home.
