Mooresville’s diversity will be on display Saturday during the 31st annual Race City Festival.

“It’s amazing just to come see downtown filled to capacity every year and see the diversity of the town,” said Kirk Ballard, president of the sponsoring Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce.

“Last year, somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 people came to see the festival and it was really remarkable. It’s always the same weekend as the All-Star Race, so we usually get a big crowd of race fans as well.”

The festival actually kicks off Friday with a 6 p.m. concert at John Franklin Moore Park across from the Depot. The fun continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities for children and adults will be available, with face painting and games to keep the kids entertained and music, arts and crafts and food galore for the adults to enjoy.

Admission is free!

“We’ll have a main stage set up at the old Ford building where there will be performances all day, from Acrofitness to local and regional bands,” Ballard said. “About 200 booths will be set up filled with everything you can imagine and the shops along Main Street will be open and having sidewalk sales. Between the food, shopping and acts on stage, there is something for everyone.”

The chamber also added a ride that Ballard hopes everyone will be “all aboard” with.

“We’ve got something new this year for the whole family, a street train named ‘The Little Blue Choo’ that will be making trips down Main and Broad streets,” said Ballard. “We’re pretty excited and I hope people enjoy it.”

The festival has grown exponentially over the years, beginning three decades ago as a small sidewalk sale.

“Mooresville has grown so much since the festival started and it’s been amazing to watch the transformation,” Ballard said. “It’s really quite a cosmopolitan town and hopefully the people who come to experience the festival get a nice snapshot of what Mooresville has to offer. We really are lucky to live here.”
