Overnight storm could could flood home and business owners' basements in bronxville 10708
One favorite show -- long ago in college -- was "Hill Street Blues." Am I dating myself here, or what? So, if you are about my age or like reruns, you may remember the Sergeant or Captain saying, "Be careful out there!" as daily police precinct briefings ended.
That's my message tonight with Heavy rain starting at dark, when visibility gets bad anyway and it will not let up until about 1am. That's 1 inch and up to 3 inches in some parts of Westchester County -- rain that's already falling on water soaked lawns and trees.
In the early morning, dense fog is going to making driving and travel even worse. There's a slow, cold front that is stretching up from Florida to our area and looked like a monster.
Now, forecasters say it's moving into the Atlantic and should not be as bad or rain for as many hours. The only issue for folks along the NY and Conn shorelines is that the heaviest rain tonight will fall at high tide. This timing could add to flood risks for home and business owners along the coast.
Just be sure not to drive in even inches of water on roadways. Even this urbane area near NYC has flash floods along our streams and "rivers."
Since the ground is pretty saturated from "April showers" and recent weeks of rain, some trees may be at risk...leading to electric wires being taken down by falling branches. Good news? It ends Saturday and the weekend should be gorgeous -- love these 50 degree nights!

This is one of many storms we've seen in recent years, with flash flood watches for roadways -- like the Bronx and Hutchinson Parkways. Over development and roadwork or bridge improvements may make things worse driving in our area, before roadways and commuting improve.
Be sure to check basements, laundry rooms and finished lower levels when you can. If water ever rises from a failed sump pump, power outage that takes out your sump and dehumidifier, be SURE not to walk into levels of water that are higher than your electrical outlets.
If you don't have an emergency kit at home and a "plan Stan" for keeping your family safe or getting everyone to safety, that could start this weekend...if the power goes out and you cannot r reruns, like "Hill Street!" Just saying...
Happy Friday and have a great weekend, Rainmakers!
