As the old saying goes; "Keep it under lock and key". Just make sure you have the only key!!
Home Buyers and Home Owners beware of a relatively new intrusion method for unwanted guests! The ordinary lockset and new keys that you purchase at your home improvement center may not provide you with the security that you have entrusted with it.
There is a new technique being used that works on most "contractor" grade locksets. It is called Lock bumping and can be accomplised by anyone with a standard key and a screw driver or stone. All an unwanted guest needs to do is insert the key into the lock and tap it a few times to dislodge or "adjust" the sets or pins and bingo, the lock turns freely. Some of your more expensive locks will not permit this. It is advised that you speak with a security company before purchasing your new locks as to which lock manufacturers will prevent Lock Bumping.
Oh, and did you just move into a new home? Here is some lock advise for the new homeowner. Information from a Master Locksmith suggests that a contractor who builds several homes usually has one lock in each home keyed the same with a master key. Then when the new homeowner moves in the locks are rekeyed. However in most cases the pins for the master key are not removed and the original master key will still work in the locks. Question. Can a sub contractor have a duplicate key made from the master? Who has access to the new home? Realtors and Home Builders should recommend to their clients that when the locks on the new home are rekeyed make certain that the locksmith removes the pins for the master lock.
Likewise, installing more expensive, top grade locks may eliminate this scenario.
Many people wish to have all their locks keyed alike so that one key fits all. This is usually a safe practice and make for great convenience. Look at your locks. If you have several different brands of locks installed it is unlikely that they will be able to all be keyed alike. New locks may need to be installed.
