"I'd Like to Encourage You to Fail..."

Graduation season is upon us. Commencements will be held at every educational institution across the nation and countless inspirational speeches will be heard by graduates and guests, alike.

Last weekend, my son graduated from the University of Buffalo. He pursued two degrees, a BS in Finance and a BA in Economics. Now comes the real challenging part - securing a job!

The Dean of the School of Management addressed us first and he began his message with the controversial words above. He continued, "before you ask for a refund on your tuition, let me explain." The gist of his speech is paraphrased below.

We are a risk-averse nation; we play it safe and we don't always appreciate the learning opportunities inherent in failure. He went on to list famous people who succeeded after many failed attempts at invention.

His words of wisdom resonated with me. I can only hope the Class of 2014 was similarly inspired.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

I bet this was a moving speech Jill. A virtual high five to your son, tell him not to enter Real Estate. He is going to do great and make you proud.

Babe Ruth held the record for the most home runs in baseball.  He also held the record for the most strike outs.  Babe Ruth's strike out record was finally broken by... Mickey Mantle!

Failure is a great lesson.  You really only learn from your mistakes, and, if you haven't failed, you haven't tried hard enough!

Jill, it sounds like Dean of the School of Management is a wise man. I trust your son will do well. He's got good genes.

Carol - I've been to many graduations and this was a most unusual message.

Stacey - thanks very much.

Noah - I don't think I have much of a choice. He's already talking about investing in multiple unit properties.

Joe - A personal favorite, as well.

Fred - I'm afraid I'm a little uninformed when it comes to baseball but your point is well taken.

Don - I think so too.

Mike - Such a lovely sentiment to express - I'm sure he's well prepared for his journey.

Jill congrats to you and your son and clearly the message would resonate with anyone who is an independent contractor like we are. I look at those huge success stories and dig deeper to discover how many failures are on their resumes:)), Endre
