Wood Home

The Wood Home in Bayside, Texas was built in 1875 by John and Nancy Wood.  You can read the historical marker that sits in front of the house.  This home was a mansion at the time and homes like this were as few as they are today in this area.  The materials were shipped by boat from Florida and Louisiana.  There are 8 bedrooms and 3 baths in this home.  It is constructed of Long Leaf Pine from Florida.  When I was there last year I learned that was a popular material to build with many years ago but does not exist today.  Another rarity for this home. ( Long leaf pine forests used to stretch from Florida to Texas but only 3% of the forests remain.)

Bayside was called St. Mary's and later the name was changed.  The town sits on Copano Bay and was a popular port city during the 1800's.  Not much reamins.  There is a nice community of residents, a post office and a bakery.  Maybe a few home based businesses too.  Most of the residents work out the area or in agriculture.

The Texas Coastal Bend is full of historyEl Copano is just east of Bayside and was the furtherest inland port on the coast.  Only 30 miles from Goliad and just a little further up to San Antonio.  The Mexican Army brought supplies to their troops this way during the Texas Revolution.  This whole area was heavily involved in the settlement of Texas.

The beach offers excellent recreation here and the bays offer great fishing but there are historical markers and unknown stories waiting for you to discover.  Learn the history of the area and you will love it even more.

Ricki-Is it still used as a residence or is it a museum. I recall lots of southeast Texas had lots of pines. I guess the size of the pines has been reduced over time.

Hi Wayne,  Good questions.  It is currently for sale.  It needs to be a museum.  I hope someone will buy it and use it for that.

The long leaf pines I am talking about are a particular kind of pine that is almost extinct.  Humans dont take very good care of the resources we are given. We just use everything up until it no longer exists. The pines in the east TX forests are a different kind I believe.  There are 4 pine forests in TX.  :)

Hi Ron,  Yes, it was a mansion in its day aand still is today.  It needs a loving owner that will preserve its extraordinary value and history.  Many of the rural mansions built in the 1800's are being neglected or destroyed.  So glad this one has remained.  There were many ships that docked in the nearby ports on the bays in this area.  I can imagine sitting on the porch and watching as they approached.  This area was so important in the settling of Texas.

Ricki,

This is a part of history and country in TEXAS I'm not familiar with! It sounds wonderful! You're right, the mansion needs someone who can preserve this beautiful building and bring back some energetic life to it.

I think it would make a great Christmas House or Bed & Breakfast. I would imagine that the inside has lots of possibilities!

All the best to you Ricki!
