Washougal River....A Good Time for All Especially If You Live Here!

Along about Memorial Day...the Washougal River starts warming up enough to jump in and swim. It is snow-fed and spring fed too. Be careful about swimming, etc. before the water warms up...it can be downright icy!

The Washougal River has so much to offer for water activities! I can speak from actual experience since I've lived in our home along the banks of the Washougal for ten years. (You can live here on the Washougal River too!) I live several miles up the river and I enjoy the drive home from work every day. It is so relaxing to admire the water tumbling, the big fir trees lining the banks and sometimes even the gorgeous blue sky draped overhead.  There are several public parking pull-out areas such as the three mile marker and the eight mile marker.

The "Three Mile Marker" is a pull-out parking area that has a beautiful waterfall. The waterfall is adjacent to the parking area and it has a small area of rapids that can be enjoyed by rafters and innertubes. This is a great place to bring the family and play in the cool waters. (It requires a Discovery Pass for parking but there are plenty of spots to park along side the road on the Washougal River.)

The "Eight Mile Marker" has a name..."The Big Eddy." Many people go there to sunbathe, picnic, swim, raft, fish and meet friends. It has a huge round "lake-like" area to float around in. But I must put in my own personal opinion here, our family and friends have had serious problems rafting through "the Slot" at the Big Eddy when the water is rushing really fast. The Slot is a divide created by huge boulders pushing the river water even faster through the "slot." It really depends on the time of year you attempt it. We have had friends almost drown or were injured there from bumping the big boulders.

When there is a nice hot day, escape to the Washougal River located off of Highway 14. Take the Washougal River exit (17th St.) and stay on it. The river drive is beautiful and winding back and forth around craggy rocks and alongside the splashing river. There are plenty of areas where you can park your car and find easy access to the cool, tumbling waters. (At the three-mile marker there is a "Discover Card" parking pass needed.)
