Don't take your home town for granted!

It's interesting how we seldom think twice about the town where we live. We wake up, go to work, come home, shop and do a myriad other things without paying much notice. I'm a Realtor living in Quarryville Pennsylvania located in the southern part of Lancaster county. The natives predictably refer to the area as "The Southern End". The town itself is typical small town Americana. There are no particular landmarks that jump out and grab your attention. The area surrounding it is rural with considerable farm land. I've lived here for forty-two years. I raised my family here, worked here, attend church here and keep up on happenings but seldom really think about it. I've had occasion to travel in my business career and have a whole list of towns and cities around the country that I think are picturesque, romantic, quaint, you name it, but I never put my own town or area on that list. I guess I thought it to be just too typical.

Recently my wife was talking to a young man who just graduated from college. He's looking for a place to rent in Lancaster County. She asked him what area he would like to live in and named several towns within the county. She didn't name our town of Quarryville or the Southern End. Probably thinking there would be more exciting places for a young man to live than here. He surprised her by saying he would prefer Quarryville. My wife admits to being"taken aback." "Why Quarryville?" she asked.  He proceeded to list his reasons: There's a shopping mall, fast food, several sit down restaurants all reasonable in price. two well maintained parks, and a public swimming pool. All things that a young man was apparently interested in.

Upon hearing my wife's experience I realized that not every community has the amenities that the young man mentioned. I started looking around. I didn't see anything new or anything I wasn't aware of before, but I realized that I just didn't give them much thought. I realized that we have a nice selection of churches, a popular retirement community, an up and coming school system. We are a relatively short drive from historic Lancaster City, barely an hour from Baltimore and at 60 miles distant its not hard to reach Philadelphia. Both Baltimore and Philadelphia have many cultural events and professional sports teams. Looking at the entire Southern End Quarryville is surrounded by a beautiful rural setting and has several relatively new "bedroom" developments for people that work in the urban areas that I listed above.

So what did I learn from this? Don't sell your home town short! After all, you chose to live there. I guess what I'm really saying is don't become so accustomed to your local surroundings that you cease to appreciate them. You'd think a Realtor in Quarryville would know better. Duh!

Take Care.
