Richmond is known for being a great place to raise kids. It almost doesn’t really matter what part of town you are located, when it comes to kids activities there are so many options it might even be hard to decide. For those of you who are new to town or have small children, you might not know of all of these different activities. Fortunately, we’ve compiled a few of them so you don’t have to do too much research.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens
Water Play
This is a water inspired activity for those hot summer days. There is a kids section filled with fountains in which kids can run around. This is all included with your admission ticket to the Botanical Gardens which is a sight to see on its own. The fountains and water sprays for this activity will be operational as long as the weather is warm throughout the summer and some days of fall. This is a great activity to share with your kids if you want them to cool off and burn some energy outdoors!

Location & Times:
1800 Lakeside Ave
Henrico, VA  23228

Weekdays 1pm-4:45pm.
Saturdays and Sundays 9am-4:45pm

Children’s Science Museum
The museum has on going activities for kids including: painting, science projects, rides and exhibitions. We recommend to get a membership for a year because it allows you to have access to three different locations in Richmond: Downtown, Short Pump & Chesterfield. What’s great about membership for the museum is that you gain access to all the different exhibits, currently they have an exhibit about dinosaurs in the downtown location. You can also buy a day pass if you just want to check out the different activities and projects and see if this is for you and your family.

Spirited Art
Summer Camp
Spirited Art is offering packages for kids to come and paint, they are based on different artists: Matisse, Van Gogh and O’Keeffe. What we really like about Spirited Art is that they provide all the supplies for you and your kids including snacks or lunch. Even though each “camp” only lasts a couple of days, it is between two to three and a half hours per day and it allows them to learn about color theory and art history. It is an educational activity as well as a fun one!

Location & Times:

The Richmond Libraries
We are very pleasantly surprised with the number of activities that the libraries in Richmond libraries have to offer. Most of them involve educational story times and activities. They cover everything from historical events to fun animal stories. The Richmond libraries have very large selections dedicated to kids both online and on site. They are free to join with a valid Richmond address.

Metro Richmond Zoo
This zoo has over 700 animals on site over a 14 acre piece of land. Their selection of animals include: lions, tigers, zebras, kangaroos, camels and many more. This is definitely fun for the whole family and kids who love animals. There are picnic areas on site and a few rides for kids. This is the perfect day activity but families can also purchase a yearly pass in case they are planning on visiting more than once.

Theme Parks
Busch Gardens & Kings Dominion
These theme parks although not technically in Richmond, are less than an hour away from the city. They both offer areas exclusively for kids with many rides specifically targeted for them. The only thing that really differentiates the two is that Kings Dominion has a Water Park within its Theme Park and Busch Gardens doesn’t. They both have different qualities that make them different, the most tangible difference is that Kings Dominion is also positioned as a park with a lot of rides while Busch Gardens has a strong focus on the different European “towns” and that it is setup more like a park. For more information about both parks visit the links below:
