Swim When You're Ready -Why I jumped into Tom Ferry's Coaching Program

Tom Ferry Real Estate Coaching

It took me a couple of years after becoming a real estate agent to see the value of a coach.  I guess I just wasn't ready to swim yet!  Here is my story on finally making the jump into having a real estate coach, and never looking back.

A Newbie Real Estate Agent

When I started as a real estate agent, I joined an agency that gave very little training.  As a result, I would seek out good training wherever I could.  During the first two years I thought about getting a real estate coach, but never thought I could afford it.  Instead, I would hunt down any free training I could find.

It was about that time that I was invited to a FREE three day real estate seminar put on by real estate coach, Tom Ferry.  Those three days were incredible.  I could not believe all of the great material that we were getting.  Three days of ideas, action plans, and a way to jump start my real estate career.  After spending three days with Tom Ferry, I was one motivated dude.

At the end of that event, he asked us all if we would like to sign up for his coaching program at $495 / month.  The thing about me is that I am very cheap and I just couldn't see spending that much - so I didn't.  I am also stubborn and thought I could do everything myself.  In this case, I told myself that I would use the techniques that he taught us and just do it without a coach.  I figured, why do I need a coach if I already have the tools that I need?  So, I gave myself six months and planned on re-evaluating at that point.

Plans Change

However, my plan didn't quite work out the way that I thought they would.  I didn't do anything in those six months.  In fact, I didn't do anything for a year.  It was at that point that I woke up one day and realized that I was no better off then I was a year ago.  In fact, I was actually worse off.  I was making less money and had more debt!  I was also scared because I only had about $1000 left on my credit card and no business was lined up.  Something had to be done.

Call me crazy, but I called up Tom Ferry's office and just decided that I needed coaching right then.  I figured that I had enough credit on my credit cards to pay for 2 months of coaching.  That would give me time to turn things around and start making money.  I don't know how this happened, but by the end of that call, not only had I signed up for coaching for a year, but I signed up on the upgraded ELITE program which was $995/month.

What was I thinking?  I only had about $1000 left on a credit card and still I signed up for a year program that could wipe me in less then two months!

Call it fate, call it good luck, call it having an angel on my shoulder - whatever it was, I knew that I would make this work out and it did.  I started the coaching program and everything just changed. I had new escrows right away and my pipeline began to fill up.  In less then 15 days, my money problems were slowly fading away.

A New Perspectic

I know what your thinking - this just sounds crazy!  Well, it was.  I attribute this change to two things.  First of all, having a coach gives you one thing you will never get on your own and that that is accountability.  Second, somehow I just knew that if I signed up for this program, that I would be okay.  It doesn't matter what you are doing.  If you have faith in yourself,  you are bound to succeed - and I did.

During that first year of coaching, another strange thing happened.  Because I signed up for the Elite Coaching program, I was invited to some fantastic special programs that only top agents were invited to attend.  I was able to rub shoulders with incredibly successful agents and I realized that in so many ways, they were no different than me.  I was just as good as them.  That was a really powerful lesson.  It gave me the confidence, for the first time as a real estate agent, to go after the million dollar sale in Las Vegas.  Considering that my average sale price at the time was around $250,000, that was huge.

If just just looked at those three things - accountability, faith and confidence - that alone would be worth the price of admission.  However, coaching is about so much more.

Looking Back

I have looked back at those dark days many times, thinking about how I just jumped into coaching with no back-up plan if it didn't work.  It was an exciting jump and one that I am forever grateful that I took.  It was a beautiful lesson in trusting my gut instinct and sometimes - to just jump into the water and swimming! In this case, the view from the pool was amazing!

Jimmy~what an inspiring post! It was written from the heart, from that deep place of trust, in yourself, that intuition, that blind faith...I listen to that all of the time. I am SO happy that you are believing in yourself and that your life is going straight up as a result!

I read a great book called,"What They Don't Teach You In Harvard Business School" which was really about trusting your GUT. It has served me well, when I listen to it. And spoken with a great sense of credence, you can win people over and they will trust you as well.

Good luck to you!

Suggested Jimmy! Talk about a HUGE LEAP OF FATE! I would have reservations about paying that much for a coach and to think you upped your ante and  joined the Elite Group! Holy Cow! You jumped off the cliff with that one and you soared!

You are now my AR Realtor Hero!
