My perch on the porch!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

My perch on the porch by Richard WeisserAs Zeus from Olympus gazed upon
The feats of heroes, gods and man,
So too, from my lofty perch I spy
On Nature’s gifts and passers-by!
       ( R Weisser 2014)

In Summer in the South, porches are generally reserved for the cooler early mornings and later in the evening.

In the early hours, the neighborhood is primarily shared with squirrels, hares, and occasional passing geese. This morning I was blessed to see two juvenile pileated woodpeckers literally “earning their wings!

In the evening, one is more likely to see neighbors scurrying about doing yard chores or engaged in various outdoor recreational activities.

And although not hidden from view, the porch-sitter is generally ignored as any other fixture of the environment. And so everyone goes about their business without so much as a hint of being exposed to observation. It’s the earliest form of reality entertainment!

And there are NO commercials!

Don't have a porch but a very nice deck.  Put it on the east side of the house so I get the morning sun and the evening shade.

That's a nice one--kind of oldtimey and narrative.

No on sits on front porches around here.  Do people still do that?

I just came in from my porch, having had a lovely conversation with a screech owl named Owlivia. ;-)

As long as it's big enough for a rocking chair or two!

I can't imagine not having one!

Or a morning cup of coffee!

My deck gets morning sun, and as you can see in the photo, my porch gets a nice shade in the evening!

I try to use this format every Sunday. I like to try to paint a picture with words!

I guess it's a regional thing!

OWLivia! I love that!

One of my favorite memories from my youth was walking out on our giant porch late at night and watching the snowflakes quietly fall to the ground as the street light was glowing behind them.

I don't have a  porch but I do have a patio I very much enjoy using during the mornings to drink my coffee. We have a tree that hangs over the area and it gives it nice shade.

Richard, we have a three seasons room on the back of our home. A great place to enjoy nature on our wooded lot.

Richard, in our area the front porch is the original social media outlet. It's not that way as much today, but it still happens some.

I love my front porch. Living on 5 acres, I'm not observing neighbors doing yard work. But I do get an occasional hot air balloon in my yard. That's always a treat.

Porches are almost non existent here and even the nice decks are mostly used for grilling and then ducking back inside.

Porches are great for relaxing especially during morning time. I can imagine the freshness that breathes from the morning sunshine that compliments the aroma of a freshly brewed coffee.

I have a listing right now with a large front porch and I had it open yesterday.  I know exactly what you mean - while I sat on the porch I was an observer but also felt hidden. like it was my little secret.

Once lived in a priceless old Victorian home located within a park setting. The front porch with the surrounding Lilies of the Valley and garden of rose and pink Peonies border was so beautiful. Yes, to your post ~

Richard, around here, it is common to see people sitting on their porches. Especially when it starts to cool off here in Arizona in the evening. Most people have "Arizona Rooms" which are screened in covered porches, to enjoy the cool air yet be screened in away from bugs.

Brings back memories, Richard. People watching is a great way to relax. Someone stopping to chat by is a treat! We've solved a lot of the world's problems on the porch, too!
Thanks for sharing,

We created a nice secluded front porch at our house and enjoy sitting out there often....however we miss the "reality TV" in our seclusion.  It's just a great place to unwind.

I have a four sided porch and all four sides get used during the year for walking, grilling, sitting, snoozing etc.

There being no commercials is a pretty darn good selling point.

There is a post I did about porches.  Yes, they do have a great way of making the home extend to embrace the activities beyond the four walls.
