What’s happening in May in St. Augustine

Ever seen a pink jail? Built in 1891by Henry Flagler, the “Old Jail” of St. Augustine served as the St. Johns County Jail until 1953. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, visitors are allowed to walk through it and go inside actual cells. Careful, they’re a tad tight. Really eerie, though, is the gallows behind the jail where eight hangings took place, said the movers Jacksonville, Fl. Ironically, the outside of the jail features a white-painted porch where, perhaps, the sheriff’s wife might have enjoyed relaxing.  And, yes, it’s really painted pink. The idea behind the beautiful exterior was that the building would blend in with the neighborhood - gallows and all!

For another haunting experience, fright-seeing tours explore the city’s darker side in May.

On the brighter side, kids of all ages will enjoy the old town trolley tour, narrated by the conductor. Learn about the city’s history, attractions and sites. Looking for another way to see the city? Helicopters are also available throughout the month. This gives visitors a chance to see the city in various ways, said the movers Jacksonville, Fl.

Mark your calendar for the St. Augustine Beach Civic Association’s eighth “Taste of the Beach” taste-fest. Participants and judges select the coveted “Best of the Beach” restaurant.  Admission is free and taste tickets are $1 each. The event takes place May 19, noon to 6 p.m., at St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion, situated at 350 A1A Beach Blvd. For information, call (904)347-8007, said the movers Jacksonville, Fl.
